In 1927, the second of a two day tornado outbreak
continued to hit much of the United States from Texas to
Lower Michigan. Of the 28 twisters that occurred, five
were violent F4s. Three of these struck around Dallas
early that morning, where 40 were killed and 160 were
injured. Many houses were leveled, and several vanished.
In Collin County, three fourths of the town of Nevada
was destroyed.The most devastating was a massive F4
that tore a 60 mile track from extreme Northeast Arkansas
to extreme Southeast Missouri.Known as the Poplar Bluff
Tornado, the tornado averaged nearly 600 yards wide. Of
the 98 fatalities, 93 were in Missouri. There were
around 300 injuries and $2.1 million damage.
