Low lying areas near Mountain Village could flood today through Tuesday. Low Lying areas downstream near Emmonak, Alakanuk, Nunam Iqua and Kotlik have potential to flood late Tuesday night through Friday. If an ice jam forms, water could rise rapidly. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - The Yukon River broke up to past Mountain Village on Sunday May 19. The breakup front will likely reach Emmonak and Alakanuk between Tuesday night and Friday, based on historic trends. There is potential for flooding in Emmonak, Alakanuk, Nunam Iqua and Kotlik as breakup progresses. Though this year has mostly been a thermal breakup for the Yukon River, an ice jam did form and release May 19 downstream of Pilot Station which led to flooding. This run of ice could lead to high water downstream. In addition, satellite imagery depicts minimal degradation of shorefast ice along the Yukon Delta Coast. This may exacerbate the situation as shorefast ice could impede the breakup push and lead to backwater in communities closest to the coast. - Http://www.weather.gov/aprfc - Please stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or your favorite local weather news source for updates on this situation. - If you live near or along the Yukon River on the Yukon Delta move valuables to higher ground, stay alert and be prepared to take action.
