...FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

* WHERE...A portion of western North Carolina, including the
  following counties, Henderson and Transylvania.

* WHEN...Until 800 PM EDT.

* IMPACTS...Nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to streams
  and other poor-drainage areas, including farmland, parks,
  greenways, boat-access areas, golf courses, underpasses, and
  parking lots. Isolated, shallow flows over roadways is possible.
  A few flood-prone, low-water crossings may become impassible.  A
  small culvert washout or two is possible.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
  - At 521 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to
    training thunderstorms over the headwaters of Mills River
    near the Henderson/Transylvania County line as well as feeder
    streams into the French Broad River near Etowah. Between 1
    and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen over the past 60 minutes.
    Areas around and within Etowah have seen up to 2 inches of
    rain in less than 45 minutes. Resultant excess runoff may
    result in nuisance flooding across the Advisory area.

    The areas of primary concern include near and within Etowah
    where poor-drainage flooding is possible. High flows along
    Gash Creek near Etowah Valley Golf Club and Etowah Park may
    cause nuisance flooding. Also, high flows along Boylston
    Creek and Boylston Highway (NC 280) may cause lowland
    flooding and flooding of low-water crossings north of Etowah.

  - An additional inch of rainfall is possible within the
    Advisory area, primarily from Etowah and south over Sentell
    Creek and Big Willow Creek. This may result in nuisance
    flooding from Etowah and south. Areas north of Etowah will
    not see any more heavy rainfall from ongoing storms.

  - Some locations that will experience flooding include...
    Mills River, Etowah, Laurel Park, Looking Glass, Forge
    Mountain, North Transylvania, Horse Shoe and Penrose.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate route.
