Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
107 PM PDT Thu May 30 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A few quick moving northern stream troughs look to
clip the Silver State for the end of May and the start of June,
but any moisture looks to remain out of reach as high pressure
looks to build over Nevada by the end of next week bringing warmer
temperatures across the west.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Friday

Weak upper trough passing to our north will push a weak wind
shift line trough northern Nevada Friday morning. With little
upper support apparent models now show this boundary will be dry
with quiet conditions to end the short work week. Meager mid level
moisture existing across central Nevada, this boundary will only
have the potential to generate some concentrated convective build
ups across White Pine county for Friday evening. Temperatures
continue slow warm-up Friday, with highs in the upper 70 to upper
80s, with temperatures dropping into the low 40s to mid 50s. Winds
will start WNW tonight shifting to NW with the boundary passing
through Friday with speeds of 5 to 15 MPH with gusts up to 25 MPH
possible.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday. A weak trough is
expected to develop on Saturday across the western United States.
This will allow for a southwest flow over the forecast area. An
isolated shower/virga remains possible in far eastern and
northeastern Nevada as a convergent boundary sets up across the
eastern part of the US Highway 50 corridor, northeast to the Idaho
border. Highs will be in the upper 70s and 80s. Winds will
be breezy in the afternoon with gusts of 25 mph. Quiet and dry
conditions will be prevalent overmuch of the area, though a very
light, isolated shower cannot be ruled out in far northeast
Nevada. Lows in the 40s and 50s.

The trough will pass over the area Sunday with a mix of clouds and
sun as a result. West to northwest winds will be breezy during
the afternoon with gusts of 25 to 30 mph. Highs will be a little
cooler with readings in the 70s and 80s. Skies will be partly
cloudy with lows in the 40s and 50s for the night period.

An upper trough is expected to move into the northeast Pacific
early Monday morning and will push across northern British
Columbia, Canada during the day. The forecast area will be at the
southernmost tip and light isolated to scattered showers are
expected mainly north of I-80. Winds will be breezy to locally
windy with west to northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts to 40
mph. Highs Monday will be in the 70s and 80s with lows in the 40s
and 50s.

Look for quiet weather returning Tuesday through Thursday as
models are continuing to suggest an upper ridge building over the
southwestern United States. This will keep a lid on chances for
precipitation but temperatures are expected to soar to above
normal levels. Highs in the 80s to near 90s on Tuesday, with 80s
and 90s on both Wednesday and Thursday. Overnight lows will dip
into the 40s and 50s.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will continue through the next 24
hours at all terminals. Winds will be more on the light side with
some gusts to 25KT.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Flows on many small creeks and streams remain
elevated. The lower Humboldt continues to run strong with Battle
Mountain currently in action stage and Comus forecast to enter
action stage later in the coming days.

Wildhorse Reservoir resides in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next several days.

Humboldt River at Battle Mountain remains in action stage and is
forecast to slowly fall below action stage.

Finally, Lamoille Creek will be hovering around action stage for
the next couple days and may even increase slightly as
temperatures slowly climb higher in the afternoon period.
