249 FXUS65 KLKN 191113 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 413 AM PDT Sun May 19 2024 .SYNOPSIS...Cooler temperatures across northern NV today, with light rain showers possible in White Pine county and SE Elko county. The cooler air expands south across central NV on Monday, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across the eastern half of NV in the late afternoon and early evening hours. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night. Trough energy dropping through the Pacific NW will bring much cooler temperatures to northern NV today, with most locations across Humboldt, Elko and the northern halves of Lander and Eureka counties with afternoon highs 10-15 degrees cooler than Saturday. Weak instability across portions of eastern NV today and tonight where there is a 15-25% chance of light rain showers. Mountains of eastern NV may see a light dusting of snow tonight into early Monday morning. Trough energy continues to dig south into Monday, with the cooler air expanding into central NV. Increased instability over the eastern half of the CWA Monday afternoon, with a 25-50% chance of light rain showers and a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and early evening hours. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Friday. A dry, northwest flow will influence the CWA Tuesday with cooler conditions under partly cloudy skies. High temperatures will mostly be in the 60s to near 70, with overnight lows in the 30s and 40s. Winds will be breezy out of the north and northwest with gusts to 20 mph in the afternoon. A low pressure system is expected to move southward Wednesday and affect mainly the northern half of the forecast area through Friday. This will lead to rain showers with isolated thunderstorms possible mainly across Northern Elko County. Highs will be in the 60s to 70s with lows in the 30s. Afternoon breezy conditions will develop with speeds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts to 30 mph. Dry conditions return next weekend under a westerly flow pattern. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions will be the primary flight conditions through Sunday with breezy afternoon WNW winds of 10KT to 20KT with gusts up to 30 KT possible. Shower chances will continue to wind down this evening for the US-50 Corridor, with VCSH possible for KELY through the overnight. Precipitation chances are forecast to drop below 10% by Sunday morning as the boundary acting as a focus for the showers further weakens. && .HYDROLOGY...Near to above normal temperatures continue to enhance melting of the remaining high mountain snowpack, which will in turn result in elevated and at times increasing flows on streams and creeks coming off snow covered higher terrain. Lamoille Creek, Owyhee River at Mountain City, Wildhorse Reservoir, and the Jarbidge River near Jarbidge are all currently in action stage, and are expected to remain elevated over the coming days. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...None. && $$ 96/90/98
