997 FNUS54 KMAF 230728 FWFMAF Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX 228 AM CDT Thu May 23 2024 ...A RED FLAG WARNING REMAIN IN EFFECT THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING FOR THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND ADJACENT PLAINS OF WEST TEXAS AND SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES AS LOW AS 2 PERCENT, 20 FT WINDS GREATER THAN 20 MPH AND EXTREME FIRE DANGER... .DISCUSSION... Fire weather concerns increase today as very dry air expands across the region with widespread RH under 5 percent and temperatures 5-10 degrees above normal. Increasing winds in the mountains and adjacent plains will yield critical fire weather conditions. This will combine with extremely dry fuels helping to increase fire potential in these areas. Although very dry air will spread across the entire region today, greenup and lighter winds largely mitigate more substantial fire weather concerns. Elevated conditions are possible again on Friday, with another round of critical fire weather conditions Saturday as winds increase across the mountains once again. The forecast looks to remain hot and dry until some relief arrives the middle of next week. && For point-specific forecasts please see the Point Fire Weather Matrix product issued by the Midland/Odessa National Weather Service Office.
