Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
220 PM SST Sun May 26 2024

.Discussion...
As a ridge gradually diminishes over the territory, instability
will increase in the area through midweek. This pattern is evident
on latest satellite data showing some build up of clouds across
the Islands. The lightning cast probability also detects lightning
signals, which suggests possible thunderstorm development within
the next hour. Expect scattered showers through tonight with a
slight chance of thunderstorms.

As mentioned earlier, the aforementioned pattern will hold
through midweek until the ridge completely exits the region.
Hence, passing showers and an east breeze of 10 to 15 mph will
persist for this time. Thereafter, an active trough to the south
will push towards the Islands on Thursday. Model data depicts an
uptick in showers with the trough. Meanwhile, a strong ridge
building behind the trough (Southwest of the Islands) will
enhance windspeeds due to the difference in pressure gradients.
Inclement weather is expected with this weather pattern, however,
the potential for flooding is low at this time.

.Marine...
Latest wave heights remain around 4 to 6 feet, which indicates
calm and smooth seas across the American Samoa coastal waters.
Expect this wave state to continue through Monday before building
Monday night. Model data has been consistent in this building
trend due to a strong south swell. In addition, the enhanced
winds expected Thursday will add on to even worse ocean
conditions through the new week. We encourage all mariners to stay
tuned as hazardous seas are possible for part or even most of the
week.
