Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
209 PM SST Wed May 22 2024

.Short term...
A dry airmass is evident over the region as a strong ridge
remains in the area. The trough from the previous forecast that
was anticipated to move close to the Islands today ended up being
anchored more northwest than expected. This pattern was evident on
latest satellite data showing thunderstorms near Upolu and
Savaii. Meanwhile, American Samoa stayed in the clear throughout
the day. This fair weather pattern is forecast to continue
through Friday.

.Long term...
The long term forecast from yesterday still holds as a trough
develops over the Islands by Saturday. Variable winds and an
uptick in showers is expected for this time. However, model data
suggests the trough will not be organized until Tuesday. Hence,
numerous showers is possible for the rest of the forecast period;
though the potential for flooding is low at this time.

.Marine...
Latest wave heights are around 8 to 10 feet as breezy winds
linger in the area. For this reason, a small craft advisory
remains in effect through tonight. However, as winds diminish in
the region by Thursday, so will seas. Expect waves to fall below
advisory thresholds by this time. Thereafter, no significant seas
or swells are forecast through Monday.
