356 FXUS65 KREV 290954 AFDREV Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 254 AM PDT Wed May 29 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Today will be the coolest day of the week, with gradual warming through the remainder of the week. A couple weak systems bring gusty southwesterly afternoon winds on Saturday and again on Monday. Conditions are expected to remain dry through the entire forecast period. && .DISCUSSION... An upper-trough that brought another round of afternoon showers and storms to the region has moved out of our region, leaving slightly cooler and drier northwesterly flow over the region this morning. As such, temperatures will moderate a bit today, yet highs will still be around or just above seasonal averages this afternoon. Expect typical afternoon breezes today, with the only factor straying from normal is that these winds will be out of the northwest. To sum up the pattern into early next week: a couple upper-level shortwave troughs swing through the Pacific Northwest and squash the atmosphere`s sad attempts at building high pressure over the western US. Mostly zonal flow will be all the atmosphere can muster Thursday and Friday, with temperatures gradually warming to almost 10 degrees above seasonal averages by Friday. This will be the best chance this weekend to see our first 90 degree day of the year, with a 30-40% chance at KRNO. The first weak shortwave swings by to our north on Saturday, leading to a pause in the warming trend and bringing gusty southwest afternoon winds. A transient ridge passes over the region on Sunday, before another shortwave follows hot on its trail Monday. As this system brushes by to our north, expect another afternoon of gusty southwesterly winds. Ensembles still indicate an anomalous ridge of high pressure building over the western US by Tuesday. This will bring substantially warmer temperatures to the region, with blended guidance suggesting daytime highs may reach 10-15 degrees above average by mid next week. Even the day 8-9 cluster ensemble suites show unanimous support for this pattern continuing, which is indicative of increasing potential for a longer-duration of heat- related health impacts. With this looking like our first major warm- up of the season, now is the time to ensure cooling devices are in working order! Whitlam && .AVIATION... VFR conditions prevail today with north/northwest breezes to 10-15 kts this afternoon. Skies will be mostly clear today with the exception of some passing high clouds this afternoon.
