Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
221 PM SST Sat Jun 1 2024

.Short term...
A brief break in strong winds and rainfall were evident this
morning. However, this ideal weather was short lived due to
thunderstorms embedded within a trough that quickly developed
over the Islands this afternoon. We are currently experiencing
heavy rainfall and gusty winds as thunderstorms continues to
build in the area. Model data holds unstable conditions leading to
inclement weather through Sunday, with windspeeds increasing to
advisory levels (25 mph or higher) Sunday morning as a ridge
strengthens to the south.

.Long term...
The strengthening of the aforementioned ridge will eventually push
the trough north of the Islands Sunday night. Breezy winds
associated with the ridge will hold moisture and instability away
from the territory through Tuesday. Hence, passing showers at the
most is possible during this time. However, as the ridge
diminishes Wednesday, this will allow for another trough to
descend towards the Islands from the north. An uptick in showers
is expected as the latter trough moves over the Islands. A
southeast wind of 10 to 20 mph will remain for the longterm
forecast.

Marine...
Latest wave heights recorded via SOFAR drift buoys are around 13
to 15 feet nearby. The previous forecast remains unchanged as
surfs are expected to continue at warning levels through at least
Sunday. Strong winds are still the main driver for extremely high
surfs and hazardous rip currents. The timing for these impacts
remains for Sunday before gradually subsiding Sunday night through
Tuesday. Although seas are supposed to fall below advisory levels
(below 8 feet) by Tuesday, several sets of south swells will pass
through the area Tuesday through the end of the new week. This
means that wave heights may fall below advisory thresholds, but
high surfs or rip currents can still be strong due to the energy
produced by these swells. By Wednesday, wave heights will reflect
the energy of the swells, which will build up to 7 to 9 feet and
remain through the end of the week.
