.DISCUSSION...Today will be the warmest and driest day across the
Interior with near Red Flag conditions across most of the Eastern
Interior. Expecting winds to generally be less than 15 mph, but
temperatures to reach near 75 and min RHs to fall to 20 to 25
percent across the middle Tanana Valley and the Yukon Flats.
Thunderstorms will be less in coverage today beneath a ridge
building in from the northeast, though shortwave energy from
yesterday remains over the Upper Koyukuk Valley, so have opted to
include widely scattered thunderstorms this afternoon for that
area.
On Sunday, a shortwave trough will move over the Interior from the
east, bringing more widely scattered thunderstorms and some
heavier rain showers. Models have sped this feature up
considerably in the last 24 hours, and the focus of these storms
now looks to be west of Fairbanks along a convergence zone with
moisture being pulled north by an Arctic trough digging south over
the west coast. Temperatures Sunday will be slightly cooler and
RHs slightly wetter.
Additional chances for thunderstorms will continue in the Interior
into next week with additional shortwaves moving through the
Interior with areas of instability.
