...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1980, seven tornadoes struck South Central Nebraska.
Hardest hit was Grand Island, where four of the twisters
were rated from F2 to F4.  The most violent, an F4 with a
track 6 miles long and averaging three fourths of a mile
wide, struck Grand Island.  Four people were killed and
110 were injured.  This tornado caused most of the $300
million damage in the Grand Island area.  The tornado had
an unorthodox track, first moving west for 2 miles, then
arcing toward the south for another 4 miles.
