This snow water season has seen record low, to near record low,
snow water in the mountains of southern Montana and north central
Wyoming. Here is a look at at where automated snow measurement
sites are measuring snow water through March 25, 2024.

SNOTEL SITE Snow Water Rank (period of record)

Beartooth/Absaroka Mountains

Shower Falls Lowest (59yrs)
Cole Creek 2nd lowest (50yrs)
Placer Basin 2nd lowest (44yrs)
Lick Creek 2nd lowest (61yrs)
Monument Peak 3rd lowest (44yrs)
Fisher Creek 3rd lowest (58yrs)
White Mill 4th lowest (51yrs)
Beartooth Lake 4th lowest (44yrs)
Northeast Entrance 5th lowest (58yrs)
East Boulder Mine 8th lowest (16yrs)
Burnt Mountain 11th lowest (23yrs)
Box Canyon 13th lowest (46yrs)

Crazy Mountains

South Fork Shields 2nd lowest (44yrs)
Porcupine 7th lowest (48yrs)

Bighorn Mountains

Big Goose Lowest (26yrs)
Little Goose 2nd lowest (14yrs)
Burgess Junction 2nd lowest (43yrs)
Bald Mountain 2nd lowest (46yrs)
Tie Creek 3rd lowest (30yrs)
Bone Springs Divide 5th lowest (44yrs)
Dome Lake 6th lowest (46yrs)
Sucker Creek 7th lowest (46yrs)

For some context, the sites that are showing better values are
generally lower elevation locations (below 7500 feet) that don`t
hold large amounts of snow water. The locations showing the lowest
rankings are mainly the high elevation locations where most of
the snow water that feeds our rivers usually accumulates. Fisher
Creek for instance is at 9100 feet and normally peaks at 37
inches of snow water each year. Fisher Creek is currently showing
20.8 inches of snow water, and is at its 3rd lowest snow water on
record.

There is still some time to improve on these numbers over the
next 6 weeks or so.
