Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
405 AM CDT Tue Apr 30 2024

Today:

All is quiet across the state of Iowa early this morning as surface
high pressure is in firm control. Clear skies and light winds have
allowed for temperatures to drop into the 40s, with some locations in
northern Iowa reporting temperatures in the upper 30s. Temperatures
should fall much further by sunrise.

Breezy southerly winds will give temperatures a boost today with
afternoon highs in the 70s to near 80. Thunderstorm chances increase
once again by late afternoon and through the evening hours. Expect
storms to initially develop over western Iowa and track east. Some of
the storms will likely be strong to severe and capable of producing
large hail and damaging winds. A few tornadoes are possible as well.
Those with outdoor interests should pay close attention for quickly
changing weather conditions and have multiple ways to receive warning
information.

Tonight and beyond:

Forecast remains active through the rest of the week. This starts
with another round of widespread showers and storms by later
Wednesday and through Thursday, followed by lower chances for showers
and storms late in the week into the weekend. The severe weather
threat looks low at this time, but will continue to be evaluated in
the coming days. Moderate to locally heavy rains are anticipated which
may lead to standing water on fields and roads, as well as within
bank rises on rivers and streams.
