In 1895, an F5 tornado rumbled 22 miles from the northwest corner of Sedgwick County to 6 miles northwest of Newton. The almost one mile wide vortex killed 8, injured 25, and devastated 25 farms, a few of which vanished. Debris was carried for many miles and dead livestock were found everywhere. Four fatalities occurred in each of 2 families who had hesitated to take cover. It is possible they did not recognize the nearly 1 mile wide funnel as being a tornado. $$ Auto
