CLIMATE REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SPOKANE, WA
540 AM PDT FRI AUG 1 2014

...................................

JULY 2014 TURNED OUT TO BE A HOT ONE IN SPOKANE. THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS 75.7 DEGREES, WHICH MAKES IT THE 2ND HOTTEST JULY
EVER. JULY 1906 HOLDS THE RECORD AS THE HOTTEST JULY, BUT 2007 AND
1998 ARE 3RD AND 4TH PLACE RESPECTIVELY.

AFTER A TYPICAL JUNE, SUMMER WEATHER ARRIVED ALMOST EXACTLY ON
SCHEDULE AS TEMPERATURES WARMED INTO THE LOWER 90S FOR THE FIRST
TIME ON THE 2ND. AFTER A FEW COOLER DAYS, SPOKANE INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT RECORDED A STRING OF 12 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF 90F OR BETTER
ON THE 6TH. THIS CAME JUST SHORT OF THE RECORD OF 13 CONSECUTIVE DAYS
SET BACK IN 1917. MORE NORMAL TEMPERATUES REIGNED FOR THE 3RD WEEK
OF JULY BEFORE THE HOT TEMPERATURES REGAINED A TOE HOLD IN THE 90S,
WITH ONE 100 DEGREE DAY RECORDED ON THE 29TH.

ON THE 14TH, WET THUNDERSTORMS MOVED THROUGH THE AREA BRINGING HEAVY
DOWNPOURS TO MANY LOCATIONS. LIGHTNING ASSOCIATED WITH THESE STORMS
STARTED SOME WILDFIRES IN THE CASCADES. THE 18TH WAS A RATHER ERIE
DAY AS SMOKE FROM THE FIRES COVERED MOST OF THE INLAND NORTHWEST.

THE 23RD SAW AN IMPRESSIVE THUNDERSTORM OUTBREAK ACROSS THE AREA.
TWO INCH HAIL DAMAGED CARS NEAR KETTLE FALLS, WHILE WINDS UP TO 70
MPH BROUGHT DOWN NUMEROUS TREES AND POWER LINES FROM SPOKANE TO
NEWPORT AS WELL AS ATHOL TO SANDPOINT. THE NEXT DAY WAS AMAZINGLY
COOL AS MANY LOCATIONS DIDN`T EVEN REACH 70F. THE 69F AT SPOKANE
AIRPORT WAS A RECORD COLD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE DAY.
