...AUGUST 2014 NARRATIVE FOR CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT...

FOLLOWING A PATTERN OF ALTERNATING ABOVE AND BELOW NORMAL MONTHLY
PRECIPITATION THAT HAD BEEN IN PLACE SINCE APRIL...AUGUST
DEFINITELY CHECKED IN ON THE WET SIDE OF THINGS. TEMPERATURE-
WISE...THE MONTH AS A WHOLE AVERAGED OUT AS BEING VERY CLOSE TO THE
30-YEAR NORMAL...BUT FEATURED A NOTABLE LACK OF DAYS ABOVE 90
DEGREES. IN FACT...THERE WERE NO DAYS THAT REACHED 91 DEGREES OR
HIGHER...WHICH TIED THE MONTHLY RECORD AND HAD NOT HAPPENED SINCE
1986.

FOCUSING ON AUGUST RAINFALL IN MORE DETAIL...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF
5.87 INCHES AT CENTRAL NEBRASKA REGIONAL AIRPORT WAS 2.75 INCHES
ABOVE THE 30-YEAR AUGUST NORMAL OF 3.12 INCHES. IN OTHER
WORDS...GRAND ISLAND RECEIVED 188 PERCENT OF NORMAL AUGUST RAINFALL.
THIS WAS THE 9TH-WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD OUT OF 119 YEARS DATING TO
1896...AND WAS THE WETTEST SINCE 7.15 INCHES IN 1997. RAIN EVENTS
DURING THE MONTH WERE FAIRLY EVENLY-SPACED...AS MEASURABLE RAIN
FELL ON 16 OF THE 31 DAYS. THE HIGHEST DAILY TOTAL OF 2.04 INCHES
OCCURRED ON THE 9TH AND SET A NEW RECORD FOR THE DATE.

TEMPERATURE-WISE...THE MONTH AS A WHOLE WENT DOWN IN THE BOOKS AS
BEING VERY AVERAGE/TYPICAL...BUT A CLOSER LOOK REVEALS THAT IT
CERTAINLY FEATURED A LACK OF TRUE LATE SUMMER HEAT. THE AVERAGE
MONTHLY TEMPERATURE (RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND
LOWS) WAS 74.1 DEGREES...MERELY 0.1 DEGREES ABOVE THE 30-YEAR
NORMAL. THE MAJORITY OF THIS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL OVERALL-AVERAGE
WAS ATTRIBUTED TO DAILY LOW TEMPERATURES...WHICH AVERAGED 1.2
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. HOWEVER...PROBABLY THE MOST NOTICEABLE AND
NOTEWORTHY TEMPERATURE FACT OF THE MONTH WAS THAT ONLY TWO DAYS
REACHED 90 DEGREES (THE 3RD AND 20TH)...AND ZERO DAYS REACHED 91
DEGREES OR HIGHER. THIS WAS ONLY THE FOURTH TIME OUT OF 119 YEARS OF
RECORDS THAT AUGUST HIGHS FAILED TO EXCEED 90 DEGREES...AND HAD NOT
OCCURRED SINCE 1986. BASED ON 30-YEAR DATA FROM 1981-2010...GRAND
ISLAND TYPICALLY AVERAGES EIGHT AUGUST DAYS WITH HIGHS ABOVE 90
DEGREES. GETTING BACK TO AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURES...OF THE 31 DAYS
DURING THE MONTH 15 WERE ABOVE NORMAL...12 WERE BELOW NORMAL AND
FOUR DAYS EQUALED THEIR DAILY NORMAL. BREAKING DOWN THE MONTH INTO
WEEK-LONG CHUNKS...THE OVERALL-WARMEST WEEK WAS CENTERED FROM THE
17TH-23RD...DURING WHICH DAILY HIGHS REACHED AT LEAST 87 DEGREES
EACH DAY AND LOWS ONLY DROPPED BELOW 65 ONCE. THE MILDEST LOW
TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 74 DEGREES ON THE 20TH. THE OVERALL-
COOLEST WEEK FOLLOWED SHORTLY THEREAFTER FROM THE 25TH-31ST...DURING
WHICH SIX OF SEVEN DAYS CLIMBED NO HIGHER THAN 82 DEGREES. THE
COOLEST LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 55 DEGREES ON THE 12TH AND
THE COOLEST HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 73 DEGREES ON THE 25TH. THE MOST
EXTREME DAY-TO-DAY CHANGE IN HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH WAS
13 DEGREES...CONSISTING OF A MODEST COOL-DOWN FROM 86 DEGREES ON THE
24TH TO 73 DEGREES ON THE 25TH.

AS FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...DESPITE MULTIPLE ROUNDS OF
THUNDERSTORMS DURING THE MONTH THE CITY OF GRAND ISLAND LARGELY
AVOIDED SEVERE WEATHER. THE ONLY REPORT OF SEVERE-CRITERIA HAIL THAT
NWS HASTINGS RECEIVED FROM THE CITY WAS QUARTER SIZE HAIL ON THE FAR
WEST SIDE OF TOWN ON THE AFTERNOON OF THE 29TH. THE HIGHEST PEAK
WIND GUST OF THE MONTH AT THE AIRPORT WAS ONLY 50 MPH FROM THE
NORTH...WHICH OCCURRED DURING AN EVENING THUNDERSTORM ON THE 17TH.

&&

...METEOROLOGICAL-SUMMER 2014 SEASONAL RECAP COVERING JUNE-AUGUST...

- AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURE: 73.4 DEGREES (0.4 BELOW NORMAL)
- SEASONAL PRECIPITATION: 17.71 INCHES (6.89 ABOVE NORMAL)

FOR THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER SEASON OF JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST AS A
WHOLE...GRAND ISLAND RAINFALL TOTALED AN IMPRESSIVE 17.71
INCHES...WHICH WAS 164 PERCENT OF THE 30-YEAR SUMMER NORMAL OF 10.82
INCHES. THIS RESULTED IN THE 7TH-WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD OUT OF 119
YEARS AND WAS THE WETTEST SINCE 19.26 INCHES IN 1993. THE WETTEST
CALENDAR DAY DURING SUMMER 2014 WAS JUNE 14TH WITH 2.59 INCHES.

TURNING TO TEMPERATURES DURING METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER...THE AVERAGE
DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS 73.4 DEGREES...ONLY 0.4 DEGREES BELOW THE 30-
YEAR SEASONAL NORMAL OF 73.8 DEGREES. OF THE THREE SUMMER
MONTHS...JUNE WAS THE WARMEST VERSUS NORMAL AT 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE
AND JULY WAS THE COOLEST VERSUS NORMAL AT 2.8 DEGREES BELOW. THE
HOTTEST HIGH TEMPERATURE OF SUMMER 2014 WAS 100 DEGREES ON JULY
21ST...AND THE COOLEST HIGH WAS 66 DEGREES ON JUNE 7TH. THE COLDEST
LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE SEASON WAS 49 DEGREES ON JUNE 13TH AND THE
MILDEST LOW WAS 75 DEGREES ON JULY 25TH...JULY 21ST AND JUNE 18TH.
IN TERMS OF AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE...THE OVERALL WARMEST WEEK OF
SUMMER 2014 WAS JULY 20TH-26TH AT 80.1 DEGREES...AND THE OVERALL
COOLEST WEEK WAS JUNE 7TH-13TH WITH 64.7 DEGREES.

POSSIBLY THE MOST NOTEWORTHY ASPECT OF TEMPERATURES DURING SUMMER
2014 WAS A LACK OF PRONOUNCED HEAT. AS EVIDENCE OF THIS...ONLY 17
DAYS BETWEEN JUNE 1-AUG 31 REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90 DEGREES...WELL
BELOW THE 30-YEAR AVERAGE OF 29 DAYS. THIS TIED WITH SEVERAL OTHER
YEARS (MOST RECENTLY 2009) FOR THE 7TH-FEWEST NUMBER OF 90+ DEGREE
DAYS ON RECORD OUT OF 119 SUMMERS. IN ADDITION...ONLY ONE DAY THIS
SUMMER REACHED 100 DEGREES...THE FEWEST SINCE SUMMER 2009 NEVER
REACHED 100.
