MARCH 2014 WAS A VERY COLD MONTH. IT WAS THE COLDEST IN ALMOST HALF
A CENTURY AND THE FOURTH COLDEST ON RECORD. THE MONTH STARTED OUT IN
THE MIDST OF A DEEP FREEZE. FROM THE END OF FEBRUARY THROUGH THE
BEGINNING OF MARCH... PORTLAND SAW 10 STRAIGHT DAYS WHERE THE
TEMPERATURE DID NOT RISE ABOVE FREEZING. THIS TIED FOR THE LONGEST
STRETCH OF CONSECUTIVE DAYS AT FREEZING OR BELOW THIS LATE IN THE
YEAR. THE TEMPERATURE FIRST ROSE ABOVE FREEZING ON THE 7TH. AFTER A
BRIEF RETURN TO NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES... THE PERSISTENT COLD
RETURNED ON THE 13TH AND CONTINUED ALMOST UNABATED UNTIL THE 28TH.
THE MONTH ENDED ON A RAINY NOTE WITH TEMPERATURE FINALLY RETURNING
TO NEAR NORMAL LEVELS. ALTHOUGH SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS WELL
BELOW NORMAL... THE PERSISTENT COLD ALLOWED THE ACCUMULATED WINTER
SNOW PACK TO REMAIN ON THE GROUND THROUGH THE ENTIRE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH OF 27.0 DEGREES WAS 6.5
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS WAS THE COLDEST MARCH SINCE 1967 AND THE
FOURTH COLDEST SINCE RECORDS BEGAN AT THE PORTLAND JETPORT. THE
COLDEST MARCH ON RECORD WAS 1956 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS
25.6 DEGREES. THE WARMEST MARCH WAS 2012 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
