FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
300 PM PDT TUE JUL 7 2015

...INCREASING THREAT FOR WET THUNDERSTORMS THURSDAY...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...ONSHORE FLOW BRINGS BREEZY COAST RANGE
GAP WINDS THIS EVENING AND BETTER BUT STILL MODERATE HUMIDITY
RECOVERY ON THE CASCADE RIDGES TONIGHT. A THREAT OF MAINLY DRY
THUNDERSTORMS NEARER THE CENTRAL CASCADE CREST THIS EVENING AND
FURTHER NORTH WEDNESDAY. STORMS MAY BECOME MORE ACTIVE THURSDAY
BUT APPEAR TO BRING SIGNIFICANT RAINS. COOLER WEATHER FRIDAY INTO
THE WEEKEND.

.DISCUSSION...UPPER RIDGE STILL HOLDING OVER THE REGION WHILE A
CUTOFF UPPER LOW OFF THE NORCAL COAST CONTINUES TO SLOWLY WOBBLE
AND DRIFT NEARLY DUE EAST. A WEAK TROUGH SLIDING SOUTH ALONG THE
EASTERN PERIPHERY OF THE RIDGE IS KEEPING THE BEST INSTABILITY AND
DIFFLUENT FLOW TO THE SOUTH AND EAST...BARELY OUTSIDE OUR FIRE
ZONES. TOMORROW WILL SEE THE LOSS OF THE WEAK TROUGH`S INFLUENCE
AND ALLOW THE CUTOFF LOW`S INFLUENCE TO EXPAND NORTHWARD. HAVE
EXPANDED THE SLIGHT CHANCE THUNDER MENTION NORTHWARD AS A RESULT.
AM NOT TERRIBLY CONFIDENT WE WILL SEE ANY THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS OUR
NORTH CASCADES BUT DID NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE LEAVING OUT THE
MENTION ALTOGETHER. STORMS FROM ABOUT MT JEFFERSON NORTHWARD...IF
THEY OCCUR AT ALL...PROBABLY WILL NOT PRODUCE MUCH RAIN BUT
SHOULD ALSO NOT PRODUCE MUCH LIGHTNING EITHER. ANY STORMS SOUTH OF
MT JEFFERSON WILL MORE THAN LIKELY BE FAIRLY SHORT LIVED...ON THE
WETTER SIDE...AND STILL NOT PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT LIGHTNING COUNTS.

THURSDAY IS THE DAY TO WATCH AS THE RIDGE BREAKS DOWN AND THE
CUTOFF LOW BEGINS TO FILL AND PUSH NORTHEAST. THIS APPEARS TO BE
OUR BEST CHANCE FOR LIGHTNING BUT THERE ARE A FEW MITIGATING
FACTORS PRECLUDING ME FROM ISSUING A WATCH AT THIS POINT. STILL
LOOKS LIKE THE CUTOFF LOW WILL BE TOO FAR INLAND TO BRING THE BEST
DYNAMIC SUPPORT. THAT WILL STAY MAINLY ON AND EAST OF THE CREST.
SECOND...ANY THUNDERSTORMS WHICH DO DEVELOP WILL BE IN AN
ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY MOVE VERY LITTLE OR NOT AT ALL. THAT
ENCOURAGES DECENT RAINS UNDER THE STORMS. THIRD...AVAILABLE
ATMOSPHERIC MOISTURE IS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH THAT MODERATE TO HEAVY
RAINS SEEM VERY LIKELY ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE NEARLY STATIONARY
STORM MOVEMENT. FINALLY...THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE POTENTIAL EVENT
WILL BE MUCH COOLER ALONG WITH HIGHER HUMIDITY. THOSE MODERATING
BURNING ENVIRONMENT SHOULD ASSIST INITIAL ATTACK EFFORTS RATHER
THAN PROMOTE RAPID FIRE GROWTH. /JBONK
