...REVISED MOUNT MITCHELL OFFICIAL SNOWFALL TOTALS...

A REVIEW OF THE 21-24 JANUARY 2016 WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA SNOW EVENT
WAS CONDUCTED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) OFFICIALS AND THE
NORTH CAROLINA STATE CLIMATE EXTREMES COMMITTEE (SCEC).

DUE TO THE HEAVY DRIFTING AND BLOWING OF SNOW THAT DAY...AND IN
COMPARISON TO NEIGHBORING OBSERVATIONS...IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE
24 HOUR SNOWFALL ORIGINALLY REPORTED ON THE MORNING OF 23 JANUARY
WAS TOO HIGH.

AFTER CAREFUL ANALYSIS...WHICH INCLUDED A REGIONAL SNOW TO LIQUID
RATIO DETERMINATION...THE REVISED 24 HOUR SNOWFALL FOR THE MOUNT
MITCHELL REPORTING STATION FOR 23 JANUARY 2016 IS 21 INCHES WITH A
CORRESPONDING 7 AM SNOW DEPTH OF 33 INCHES. THE REVISED EVENT TOTAL
FOR THE 4 DAY PERIOD NOW STANDS AT 34 INCHES AND THE MAXIMUM SNOW
DEPTH WAS 36 INCHES AT 7 AM ON 24 JANUARY.
