463 FNUS55 KABQ 080828 FWFABQ Fire Weather Planning Forecast for North and Central New Mexico National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 228 AM MDT Wed May 8 2024 ...RED FLAG WARNING TODAY FROM 11 AM TO 8 PM MDT ACROSS EASTERN NM AND UPPER RIO GRANDE VALLEY DUE TO STRONG WINDS, VERY LOW HUMIDITY, AND AN UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE... .DISCUSSION... Today will see one more round of widespread critical fire weather, focused across eastern NM and the Upper Rio Grande Valley where strong and very dry westerly winds will produce gusts of 35 to 50 mph and low humidity falling into the single-digits. Elevated to locally critical conditions will be present across western NM into the Middle Rio Grande Valley. An approaching storm system and a backdoor cold front surging through eastern NM Thursday brings a significant shift in the weather pattern to cooler and wetter conditions to end the work week and into the weekend. Showers and storms will favor the northern mountains and adjacent highlands each day. The eastern plains will see persistent easterly to southeasterly winds with poor to fair ventilation while the west-central zones will see continue dry and breezy conditions. The Rio Grande Valley will see a mix of these warmer/drier and cooler/wetter conditions, highlighted first by a strong east canyon wind event Thursday night with peak gusts upwards of 55 to 60 mph possible immediately below the Tijeras Canyon.
