Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

.DISCUSSION...

Today will feature warm and dry conditions with highs mainly in the
low 60s as a ridge of high pressure shifts east into Minnesota this
afternoon. The strongest winds will be over central South Dakota,
increasing out of the south with gusts of 20 to 30 mph, in advance of
the next area of low pressure. Winds will remain light elsewhere.
Relative humidity values will be in the 20 percent range, except
near 35 percent near the South Dakota and Minnesota border.

Much warmer air will is expected Saturday, topping out near 80
degrees, or around 25 degrees above normal for this time of year.
Relative humidity values will be in the 15 to 30 percent range
Saturday afternoon, with the strongest winds over the Prairie Coteau
of eastern South Dakota gusting 20 to 30 mph through early afternoon.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread.  Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.


The outlook for Saturday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate to high category.

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread.  Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.


The outlook for Saturday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate to high category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low.  Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.


The outlook for Saturday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate to high category.
