Today:

It has been mostly cloudy and relatively mild overnight. Temperatures
have held in the upper 20s to lower 30s in most areas, and winds are
light from the east at less than 10 mph. Partly to mostly cloudy skies
will prevail today, with a few sprinkles or flurries possible at
times. Afternoon high temperatures will range from the upper 30s
northeast to near 50 south.

Tonight and beyond:

A quick shot of precipitation will move quickly across the region
late tonight into Friday, affecting Iowa mainly between around
midnight tonight and mid-morning Friday. Toward central Iowa this will
likely come in the form of showers and a few thunderstorms on Friday
morning, however, in parts of northern and eastern Iowa snow is more
likely and light freezing rain may also be possible. Several inches
of snowfall are forecast in the northeast travel impacts are likely
there, including during the Friday morning commute.

From Friday afternoon into Saturday generally quiet weather will
return, but then a large and powerful storm system will produce
multiple rounds of precipitation across most of the region for several
days. In Iowa precipitation will likely begin in the west late
Saturday and spread across the state at intervals from Saturday night
through Monday night. Widespread, significant precipitation amounts
are expected, coming in the form of rain, snow, and thunderstorms in
various times and areas. Accumulating snowfall is most likely across
northern Iowa, especially north of Highway 20.
