.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 200 AM CDT Sat Apr 20 2024

A fairly quiet forecast is in store heading into the weekend with
nearly zonal flow aloft and surface high pressure settling in to
our west. Temperatures have fallen overnight into the 40s
across most of the forecast area. Extreme northern Missouri may
even fall to near freezing for an hour or two. Thankfully, some
clouds and light winds should help work against any frost
formation, but some isolated or low lying locations could see a
bit in the early morning Saturday. As we head into the daylight
hours, temperatures warm but will remain below normal for this
time of year thanks to continued northwest winds. Into the
afternoon, expect to see highs top out in the mid 50s with a mix
of clouds and sun.

Heading into Sunday, we will see a shortwave sweep through the
southwest forecast area. Fortunately for those looking for a dry
weekend, we see continued dry air and little in the way of
moisture, so it`s passage is expected to be dry. As far as
temperatures go, we will see another chilly start to the day
with lows falling into the 30s for one more night. Northern
Missouri again has a chance at reaching reaching near freezing.
During the day, thanks to some sunshine, temperatures will rise
to warmer than Saturday, but still be below normal. Most of the
area will reach right around 60 or a few degrees on either
side.

Spring-like temperatures will finally return as we head into the
work-week. Winds will turn back to the south allowing for the return
of warm air along with moisture advection into the region. Most can
expect ample sunshine with highs reaching into the low 70s for the
afternoon. After that, our attention turns to a wave pushing across
the High Plains Monday night into Tuesday, bringing our next chance
for precipitation to the forecast area. Given that this system is
still 4 days out, still seeing some discrepancies in models, but in
generally expect QPF amounts to be light and under a half inch. A
period of dry weather with highs in the 70s can be expected for the
middle part of next week, but another system looks to make its way
into the region late next week bringing additional chances of
showers and thunderstorms. Right now it`s not clear what impacts
this system may have on our forecast area, but details will become
more clear in the coming days.
