.DISCUSSION...
Today, a warming trend continues to increase temperatures as
ridging builds over the area. High temperatures today will be
roughly 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. This warming trend
will continue through the end of the week, with the hottest day
being Thursday. Probabilistic model guidance shows a 70-90%
chance of temperatures hitting 85 degrees or higher on Thursday
afternoon. Here are specific probabilities of certain cities
within the forecast area hitting 85 degrees or higher on
Thursday afternoon:
Bakersfield: 81%
Fresno: 86%
Hanford: 81%
Lemoore: 81%
Madera: 76%
Merced: 71%
Porterville: 76%
Visalia: 81%

This ridging will give way to a low pressure system beginning
Friday, with temperatures dropping back down nearly 10-15
degrees by Saturday. This low pressure system brings a chance of
rain to the San Joaquin Valley and snow to the Sierra Nevada and
Kern County mountains. Much of the precipitation looks to fall
Saturday through Saturday night, with some lingering
precipitation to fall on Sunday morning as the low pressure
system starts to move out of the area. Rain amounts in the San
Joaquin Valley will be light, with much of the area seeing a
40-60% chance of a tenth of an inch or more.

Snow will fall in the Sierra Nevada Saturday through Saturday
night, with some snow lingering into Sunday. Snow levels will
begin at around 6,000 feet before dropping down to 5,000 feet by
Sunday. Higher elevations could see up to a foot of snow, with a
40% chance of at least six inches of snow through Saturday and
Sunday. Here are probabilities that certain Sierra Nevada areas
will see more than 2 inches of snow through Saturday and
Sunday:
Tioga Pass: 46%
Yosemite Valley: 41%
El Portal: 15%
Lodgepole: 45%
Grant Grove: 24%
Shaver Lake: 42%

After this low pressure system moves out of the area after the
weekend, ridging will take its place, bringing the dry and
warmer weather back for the beginning of next week.
