...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1909, seven tornadoes tore through the southern half
of Arkansas.  The worst of the twisters, a violent F4
with a track 15 miles long and nearly three fourths of a
mile wide, roared across Monroe and St.  Francis counties
in Southeast Arkansas.This tornado killed 49, injured
around 600, destroyed around 800 buildings, and caused
around $600,000 damage.  Brinkley Arkansas took a direct
hit and was where 42 of the 49 fatalities occurred.
