Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED
National Weather Service Elko NV
143 AM PDT Thu May 9 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Look for light, isolated to scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms mainly across the eastern half of the
forecast area today. Temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s.
Another round of light, isolated to scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms are also expected again Friday with gradually
warming temperatures into the 60s and 70s. Expect a continuation
of spring-like conditions through the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night. Skies are partly to
mostly cloudy across northern and central Nevada this morning. For
today, models are showing an upper level trough closing off with a
center of circulation in southeast Utah. Isolated to scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop later
this morning and afternoon mainly across the eastern half of the
forecast area. Rainfall will be on the light side with less than
0.05" expected. Highs will be in the 50s and 60s. North to northeast
winds will be breezy with gusts to 30 mph. Showers will dissipate
for the overnight with partly cloudy skies. Lows will be in the
20s and 30s.

For Friday and Friday night, the closed upper low is forecast to
meander west and south, taking a position over southern Nevada and
northwest Arizona. Another round of isolated to scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms will again develop with the best
chances for activity along and south of the US Highway 50
corridor. Winds will again be breezy and out of the northeast and
east, with gusts to 25 mph or so. Highs will be in the 60s and
70s. Look for partly cloudy to mostly clear skies for the night
period with lows in the 30s and 40s.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Wednesday. All models are
showing a closed off upper low spinning over northern Arizona and
southern Utah. Light isolated to scattered showers will develop
during the afternoon on Saturday. An isolated thunderstorm is also
possible but the best chances will be in portions of White Pine
county. The rest of the forecast area will see a mix of sun and
clouds. High temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s. Winds will
be occasionally breezy with speeds to 10 to 15 mph with gusts to
25 mph. Clouds will scatter out during the overnight with dry
conditions. Lows will be in the 30s and 40s.

The upper level low is expected to shift east with a ridge of high
pressure building in from the west on Sunday. This will result in
a mostly dry period with spring-like conditions through the long
term. High temperatures will be in 70s and even the low 80s with
overnight lows in the 30s and 40s.

&&

.AVIATION...Active weather across the area today, with VCSH or
VCTS expected at all terminals. VFR will be the primary flight
category although brief periods of MVFR are expected under any
showers or thunderstorms that move on terminal along with gusty
and erratic outflow winds. Breezy northeasterly gradient winds
will also be present in the afternoon with gusts 20 to 25 kts.

KWMC remains AMD NOT SKED due to a communications issue.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across several streams, creeks,
and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to seasonal
snow melt. Temperature forecasts for the upcoming weekend and into
early next week depict spring-like temperatures into the 70s and
possibly the low 80s in some spots. Given the amount of high
elevation snowpack remaining, look for runoff to increase,
causing continued elevated flows for many area streams and rivers
across northern and central Nevada.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and
is forecast remain in action stage for the next several days.

The Humboldt River at Comus is in action stage and is forecast to
remain in action stage for the next few days.

Wildhorse Dam currently resides in action stage and is forecast
to remain in action stage for the next several days.

The Owyhee River near Mountain City resides near action stage.
The river is forecast to continue to range in and out of action
stage for the next several days.
