THE TREND TOWARD WARM WEATHER THAT BEGAN IN MID JULY CONTINUED
THROUGH MUCH OF AUGUST. THE HEAT PEAKED AROUND THE MIDDLE OF THE
MONTH WHEN 3 OUT OF 4 DAYS TOPPED 90 DEGREES FROM THE 11TH THROUGH
THE 14TH. THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE OF THE YEAR OCCURRED ON AUGUST 11
WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 94 DEGREES. THIS WAS ALSO THE HOTTEST
TEMPERATURE OBSERVED AT AUGUSTA IN MORE THAN 5 YEARS. ALTHOUGH THE
EXTREME HEAT BEGAN TO ABATE, TEMPERATURES REMAINED ABOVE NORMAL FOR
MUCH OF THE REST OF THE MONTH. SOME BENEFICIAL RAINFALL ARRIVED ON
AUGUST 22 WHEN MORE THAN 1 INCH OF RAIN WAS MEASURED. THIS HELPED
HOLD BACK THE DEVELOPING DROUGHT.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 71.1 DEGREES WHICH WAS 2.8
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND THE 4TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE
WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD WAS 1973 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS
72.9 DEGREES. THE COOLEST WAS 1964 AT ONLY 62.2 DEGREES. THE
FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE WARMEST AUGUSTS AT AUGUSTA.
