AFTER PORTLAND BOASTED A RECORD WARM AND NEAR-RECORD DRY MAY, JUNE
BROUGHT A MUCH DIFFERENT WEATHER STORY. THE EXTENDED DRY AND WARM
WEATHER PATTERN FINALLY BROKE AT THE END OF MAY AND THE BEGINNING OF
JUNE WHEN 2.80 INCHES OF RAIN FELL FROM THE 31ST THROUGH THE 2ND.
THIS RAINSTORM USHERED IN A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER PATTERN AS THE
NEXT WEEK SAW BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES, THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON
JUNE 2 WAS ONLY 50 DEGREES, THE COLDEST JUNE HIGH TEMPERATURE IN
NEARLY 60 YEARS. A LITTLE WARMER WEATHER ARRIVED IN THE MIDDLE OF
THE MONTH WHEN 4 STRAIGHT DAYS TOPPED 80 DEGREES FROM THE 10TH
THROUGH THE 13TH. BUT THEN A PERSISTENT STREAM OF COLD FRONTS
BROUGHT ALTERNATING DAYS OF WARMER AND COOLER WEATHER, CULMINATING
IN TWO MORE ROUNDS OF HEAVIER RAIN ON THE 21ST AND THE 28TH ALONG
WITH COOLER TEMPERATURES.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 61.4 DEGREES WHICH WAS 2.0
DEGREES COOLER THAN NORMAL. THIS WAS THE COOLEST JUNE SINCE 2009
WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 61.0 DEGREES. THE COOLEST JUNE ON
RECORD WAS 1958 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 58.1 DEGREES. THE
WARMEST WAS 2001 AT 67.2 DEGREES.

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON JUNE 2ND WAS ONLY 50 DEGREES. PORTLAND HAS
NOT SEEN A COLDER HIGH TEMPERATURE IN JUNE SINCE 1956. IT TIED FOR
THE 4TH COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE EVER FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE. THE
HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 51 DEGREES ON JUNE 1ST ALSO MADE THE TOP TEN
COLDEST DAYS IN JUNE. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE COLDEST HIGH
TEMPERATURES IN THE MONTH OF JUNE.

COLDEST DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES IN JUNE /SINCE 1941/
RANK TEMP DATE
1 47 JUNE 9, 1956
2 48 JUNE 1, 1946
3 49 JUNE 5, 1945
4      50   JUNE 2, 2015 <===
       50 JUNE 15, 2005
       50 JUNE 1, 1992
       50 JUNE 13, 1982
       50 JUNE 13, 1948
9      51   JUNE 1, 2015 <===
       51 JUNE 7, 1977
       51 JUNE 9, 1948
       51 JUNE 8, 1947
       51 JUNE 17, 1942

THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE IN THE MONTH OF JUNE WAS 69.7 DEGREES.
WHILE THIS DOES NOT QUITE CRACK THE TOP TEN LIST OF COOLEST AVERAGE
MAX TEMPERATURES IN JUNE, IT IS THE FIRST TIME IN PORTLAND`S
RECORDED HISTORY THAT THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE IN JUNE WAS
COOLER THAN THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE IN MAY (71.4 DEGREES). THIS
WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE COMBINATION OF THE RECORD WARM MAY AND THE
SIGNIFICANTLY COOLER THAN NORMAL JUNE. THE ONLY OTHER YEAR THAT CAME
CLOSE TO SEEING A SIMILAR SCENARIO WAS 1977 WHEN THE AVERAGE HIGH
TEMPERATURE IN JUNE WAS ONLY 0.5 DEGREES WARMER THAN THE AVERAGE
HIGH IN MAY (67.4 AND 66.9 RESPECTIVELY).

A TOTAL OF 6.40 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 2.61 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST RAIN FELL ON JUNE 21ST THROUGH JUNE 23RD WHEN
2.35 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE WETTEST JUNE ON RECORD WAS 1917 WHEN
10.86 INCHES FELL. THE DRIEST WAS 1908 WITH ONLY 0.53 INCHES.

THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR, 23.01 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN.
WHILE THIS IS 0.02 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL, IT IS ALSO THE DRIEST FIRST
HALF OF THE YEAR SINCE 2007 WHEN ONLY 21.45 INCHES HAD FALLEN UP TO
THIS POINT. THE DRIEST FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR WAS 1941 WHEN ONLY
10.97 INCHES FELL.

THERE WERE 3 SEPARATE DAYS IN JUNE THAT RECORDED MORE THAN 1 INCH OF
RAINFALL. THE 1ST RECORDED 1.20 INCHES, THE 21ST HAD 1.40 INCHES,
AND THE 28TH HAD 1.58 INCHES. THIS TIES FOR THE MOST ON RECORD IN
THE 145-YEAR HISTORY OF PRECIPITATION RECORDS IN PORTLAND. THERE
WERE 5 OTHER YEARS WHICH ALSO HAD 3 SUCH DAYS (2005, 1998, 1935,
1922, AND 1917).

THE FOLLOWING DAILY RECORDS WERE SET OR TIED IN JUNE 2015...
DATE RECORD PREVIOUS
2 50 - COOLEST HIGH TEMPERATURE 54 IN 2001
28 1.58 - GREATEST PRECIPITATION 1.18 IN 1968
