PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NOME AK
101 PM AKST SUN MAR 1 2015

...8TH WARMEST FEBRUARY AND RARE PHENOMENON...

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY IN NOME WAS 15.7
DEGREES...THIS WAS 8.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS FEBRUARY 2015
AS THE 8TH WARMEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD...COMPARED WITH THE WARMEST ON
RECORD OF 22.5 DEGREES SET BACK IN 1989. TEMPERATURE RECORDS IN NOME
DATE BACK TO 1907.

TWO DAILY RECORDS FOR MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE WERE BROKEN DURING THE
MONTH AND TWO HIGHEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURES WERE ALSO BROKEN. THE
FIRST RECORD HIGH WAS SET ON THE 21ST WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 40
DEGREES BREAKING THE RECORD OF 36 SET BACK IN 1957. THE SAME DAY THE
LOW OF 32 DEGREES BROKE THE RECORD OF HIGHEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF
28 SET BACK IN 1934. ON THE 22ND THE RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS
EQUALED WITH A HIGH OF 35 TYING THE PREVIOUS RECORD SET IN 1940. THAT
SAME DAY THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED ONLY TO 33 DEGREES...THUS SETTING A
NEW RECORD FOR THE HIGHEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURE...BREAKING THE OLD
RECORD OF 30 SET BACK IN 1942.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS RIGHT ON NORMAL...THOUGH THE
PRECIPITATION WAS ALL RECORDED IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE MONTH. THE
TOTAL FOR THE MONTH WAS 0.93 INCHES OF WATER EQUIVALENT. THIS
REPRESENTED 10.2 INCHES OF SNOWFALL...AROUND 2 INCHES LESS THAN
NORMAL ON THE SNOWFALL.

SOMETHING THAT IS NOT NORMAL IS THE OCCURRENCE OF A THUNDERSTORM IN
FEBRUARY IN NOME. THOUGH THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED ON THE MORNING OF THE
24TH. A VERY RARE THUNDERSTORM WAS REPORTED AROUND 8 AM WITH THE
ACCOMPANIMENT OF HEAVY SNOWFALL. TWO FLASHES OF LIGHTNING AND THUNDER
WERE HEARD ABOUT 3 MINUTES APART. THIS WEATHER PHENOMENA IS RARE IN
NOME IN A GIVEN YEAR IN THE SUMMER...MUCH LESS IN THE MIDDLE OF
WINTER.
