SUBJECT...   WAVE TERMINOLOGY IN MARINE COASTAL WATERS FORECASTS
...EFFECTIVE JUNE 2 2014

BEGINNING JUNE 2, 2014, THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PORTLAND
OREGON WILL BEGIN USING COMBINED SEAS WAVE TERMINOLOGY IN THE
COASTAL WATERS FORECAST WHEN THE SWELL AND WIND WAVE COMPONENTS
CANNOT BE CLEARLY DISTINGUISHED.  IN THESE SITUATIONS, WAVE
TERMINOLOGY SUCH AS COMBINED SEAS NW 10 FEET AT 8 SECONDS WILL BE
USED.

WHEN THE WIND WAVE AND SWELL WAVE COMPONENTS CAN BE DISTINGUISHED,
WE WILL CONTINUE TO USE EXISTING SWELL AND WIND WAVE TERMINOLOGY
SUCH AS NW SWELL 10 FEET AT 8 SECONDS, WIND WAVES 4 FEET.
