...Ice Jams Possible Through Early This Week...
Snowmelt water from the recent warm days was flowing into many
streams and rivers across the area. Most rises have been in the
one to two foot range. This is enough to cause what ice cover
there is on area rivers to break up and jam as the meltwater and
ice flow downstream.
Ice jams have been observed along the Turkey River at Millville
and the Volga River near Fayette. Gauges on the Turkey River
upstream of Elkader Iowa and on the Upper Iowa River near
Dorchester have given signals of brief jams.
With temperatures remaining at or above freezing through Monday,
snowmelt and the threat of ice jams will continue. The greater
threat of jams will generally be the lower reaches of the
tributary rivers where the flow slows down as they approach the
Mississippi, or where river channels tighten or make quick turns.
Fluctuations in river levels are possible as ice continues
to break up and move down stream. Area residents are urged to
monitor river levels the next couple days and report any rapid
rises or flooding to law enforcement.
