...December At Rochester MN Had Major Swings in Temperature And Was
Drier Than Normal...

The average temperature for December was 17.9 degrees, which was 1.8
degrees below normal. The average high temperature was 25.5 degrees,
while the average low was 10.3 degrees. The highest temperature for
the month was 64 degrees on the 4th, while the lowest readings was 17
below zero on the 31st.

A total of 0.51 inches of precipitation fell during the month, which
was 0.72 inches below normal.  The greatest precipitation daily
precipitation total was 0.17 inches on the 11th.

There was 7.2 inches of snow recorded for the month, which was 5.3
inches below normal. The greatest daily snowfall was 2.3 inches on
the 21st. Total snowfall for the season at months end was 10.5
inches, which was 8.9 inches below normal.


*****RECORDS*****

On December 4TH, the temperature reached 64 degrees, setting a
record for the day, the old record was 57 degrees in 1941.

The 64 degrees was also the warmest high temperature for December,
the previous record was 63 degrees December 17, 1939.

This high temperature was also the warmest temperature ever recorded
in Meteorological Winter. The previous record was 63 degrees on
December 17th, 1939, and February 17th, 1981.

*****DISCUSSION*****

The first 3 days of the month saw temperatures in the 50s, and then
spiked to 64 degrees on the 4th setting a record for the day, month
and season. Temperatures then tended to be above normal until the
last week of the month, with the first sub-zero reading recorded on
Christmas. Temperatures then remained much below normal through the
31st, which also included some notably bitter wind chills.

...LOOKING AHEAD TO JANUARY...

January is the coldest month of the year with an average temperature
of 15.7 degrees. The average high is 23.6 degrees and the average
low 7.7 degrees. The normal daily high temperature starts at 24
degrees, and then  dips to 23 degrees by the second week, and then
ends up at 25 on the 31ST. The normal low temperature is 9 degrees
on the 1st, then drops to 7 degrees by mid month, and then ends up
at 8 degrees on the 31st. Normal precipitation for the January is
0.85 inches with 12.0 inches of snow.
