...DECEMBER AT LA CROSSE WI HAD MUCH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES
AND BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION AND MUCH BELOW NORMAL SNOWFALL...

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 28.0 DEGREES. THIS WAS 6.4
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 22 WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD.
THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 33.5 DEGREES...WHILE THE AVERAGE
LOW WAS 22.4 DEGREES. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE IN DECEMBER WAS 49
DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 15TH... WHILE THE LOWEST READING FOR
THE MONTH WAS 3 DEGREES BELOW ZERO WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 31ST.

A TOTAL OF 1.10 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL DURING THE MONTH OF
DECEMBER...WHICH WAS 0.26 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE GREATEST 24-HOUR
PRECIPITATION TOTAL WAS 0.45 INCHES WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 22ND TO
THE 23RD.

THERE WAS 2.0 INCHES OF SNOW RECORDED FOR THE MONTH...WHICH WAS 9.3
INCHES BELOW NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 13TH LOWEST DECEMBER SNOWFALL
ON RECORD. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR SNOWFALL OF 1.2 INCHES OCCURRED ON
THE 23RD.

DECEMBER 14TH...THE LOW TEMPERATURE AT THE LA CROSSE AIRPORT WAS 43
DEGREES. THIS ESTABLISHED A NEW RECORD FOR THE WARMEST MINIMUM
TEMPERATURE. THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 41 HAD STOOD FOR 123 YEARS SINCE
BEING SET IN 1891.

DECEMBER 15TH...THE LOW TEMPERATURE AT THE LA CROSSE AIRPORT WAS 42
DEGREES. THIS TIED THE RECORD FOR THE WARMEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURE
FOR THE DATE THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN SET IN 1877.

*****DISCUSSION*****

THE MONTH STARTED OFF ON A COLD NOTE AND THEN TRANSITIONED TO A
MILDER WEST TO SOUTHWEST FLOW THAT PERSISTED THROUGH MUCH OF THE
MONTH. THIS FLOW ALSO BROUGHT A LOT OF CLOUDS INTO THE REGION WHICH
HELPED KEEP THE TEMPERATURES UP OVERNIGHT...WHICH RESULTED IN A
RECORD WARM LOW TEMPERATURES ON THE 14TH AND 15TH. THERE WERE IN
FACT 23 OF THE 31 DAYS DURING THE MONTH WITH ABOVE AVERAGE DAILY
TEMPERATURES. COLD AIR FINALLY RETURNED BY THE END OF THE MONTH WITH
THE LAST 3 DAYS AVERAGING BELOW NORMAL.  PRECIPITATION AND SNOWFALL
WAS RATHER SPARSE DURING THE MONTH WITH JUST 4 DAYS...THE 7TH...
15TH...23RD...27TH...ACCOUNTING FOR THE BULK OF THE PRECIPITATION
AND SNOW.
