...MUCH BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURE...SLIGHTLY BELOW PRECIPITATION AND
ABOVE NORMAL SNOWFALL OBSERVED AT LA CROSSE WI DURING JANUARY 2014...

THE AVERAGE JANUARY TEMPERATURE AT LA CROSSE WAS 9.4 DEGREES WHICH
WAS 8.0 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL...AND THE 4TH COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD
SINCE 1980. THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS 19.9 DEGREES WHILE THE
AVERAGE LOW FOR THE MONTH WAS -1.1 DEGREES. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE
FOR THE MONTH WAS 43 DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 12TH...WHILE THE
LOWEST TEMPERATURE WAS 20 DEGREES BELOW ZERO ON THE 6TH.

A TOTAL OF 0.98 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL DURING THE MONTH OF
JANUARY...WHICH WAS 0.14 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE HIGHEST 24 HOUR
TOTAL WAS 0.32 INCHES...WHICH FELL ON THE 14TH.

SNOWFALL FOR THE THE MONTH TOTALED 15.7 INCHES...WHICH WAS 5.0 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE GREATEST 24 HOUR SNOWFALL TOTAL FOR JANUARY WAS 6.5
INCHES WHICH FELL ON THE 14TH. TOTAL SNOWFALL FOR THE SEASON AS OF
JAN 31ST WAS 29.4 INCHES.

THE NORTHWEST FLOW PATTERN THAT STARTED IN DECEMBER CONTINUED INTO
JANUARY. THIS ALLOWED FOR REPEATED WEATHER SYSTEMS TO DROP IN OUT OF
THE NORTHWEST THAT WERE THEN FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER SURGE OF ARCTIC
AIR. THE COLDEST AIR OF THE MONTH ARRIVED ON THE 6TH WHEN THE HIGH
FOR THE DAY ONLY REACHED 10 BELOW...WHILE THE LOW DROPPED TO 20
BELOW ZERO. THERE WERE IN FACT 20 DAYS DURING THE MONTH WITH BELOW
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WITH MANY OF THESE DAYS HAVING VERY COLD TO
DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS.  MEASURABLE SNOW FELL ON 12 DAYS WITH TRACE
AMOUNTS FALLING ON ANOTHER 6 DAYS.
