SEPTEMBER BEGAN THE SAME WAY AUGUST ENDED, WITH COOL, FALL-LIKE
WEATHER. AFTER A FEW DAYS OF RAIN, A NEW WEATHER PATTERN BEGAN TO
EMERGE. A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE BUILT OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC AND
THE EAST COAST, PUMPING WARM, HUMID AIR UP INTO NEW ENGLAND.
ALTHOUGH AN OCCASIONAL COLD FRONT BROUGHT TEMPERATURES BACK DOWN
CLOSER TO NORMAL LEVELS, THE WARMTH AND HUMIDITY KEPT RETURNING. THE
HEAT PEAKED IN LATE SEPTEMBER WHEN THERE WERE 5 CONSECUTIVE DAYS
ABOVE 80 DEGREES FROM THE 23RD THROUGH 27TH, INCLUDING A HIGH OF 89
ON THE 24TH. A STRONG COLD FRONT BROUGHT COOLER WEATHER FOR THE LAST
TWO DAYS OF THE MONTH, MORE TYPICAL OF WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED IN
FALL.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 65.3 DEGREES WHICH WAS 4.9
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD WAS IN 2015
WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 65.4 DEGREES. THE COOLEST WAS 58.8
DEGREES IN 2000.

A TOTAL OF 2.57 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 1.62 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL MARKING THE 4TH STRAIGHT MONTH OF BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION
AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN GRAY. NEARLY ALL OF THIS
RAIN FELL IN THE FIRST WEEK OF THE MONTH, WITH THE HEAVIEST ON THE
6TH WHEN 0.86 INCHES FELL. THE DRIEST SEPTEMBER HAD ONLY 1.06 INCHES
FALL IN 2016 AND 2014. THE WETTEST WAS IN 2008 WHEN 12.55 INCHES
FELL.
