...RAINS BRING RELIEF TO PART OF WEST KENTUCKY...

SYNOPSIS...

SEVERE DROUGHT /D2/ HAS BEEN DOWNGRADED TO MODERATE DROUGHT /D1/
IN THE PURCHASE AREA OF WEST KENTUCKY AS WELL AS A FEW WESTERN
COUNTIES IN THE PENNYRILE AREA. IN KENTUCKY, SEVERE DROUGHT
REMAINS SOUTH AND EAST OF A LINE FROM OWENSBORO TO PROVIDENCE TO
CADIZ.

MODERATE DROUGHT /D1/ CONTINUES ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
AND THE OHIO RIVER COUNTIES OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AND INDIANA.


SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

SOIL MOISTURE CONDITIONS.
TOP SOIL INDICES HAVE IMPROVED A LITTLE WITH RECENT RAINS WHILE
SUBSOIL CONDITIONS REMAIN DRY.

AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS.
PASTURE LAND ACROSS MUCH OF KENTUCKY REMAINS IN POOR CONDITION AND
HAY FEEDING HAS BEGUN IN SOME AREAS. LIVESTOCK PONDS IN MANY AREAS
ARE STILL BELOW WHERE THEY SHOULD BE AND SOME FARMERS ARE HAULING
IN WATER FOR LIVESTOCK.

FIRE DANGER IMPACTS.
BURN BANS HAVE BEEN LIFTED ACROSS THE REGION.


CLIMATE SUMMARY...

AT PADUCAH, KENTUCKY, THE SEPTEMBER THROUGH NOVEMBER
CLIMATOLOGICAL FALL WAS THE WARMEST ON RECORD AND THE SECOND
DRIEST. THE AVERAGE HIGH WAS 76.3 DEGREES, 5.8 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL AND THE THREE-MONTH PRECIPITATION TOTAL WAS ONLY 3.82
INCHES, 8.19 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

IT WAS ALSO THE WARMEST FALL ON RECORD AT CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI
WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 74.7 DEGREES, 5 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL. EVANSVILLE, INDIANA RECORDED THE SECOND WARMEST FALL ON
RECORD WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 75 DEGREES, 5.8 DEGREES
ABOVE NORMAL.

AT PADUCAH, KENTUCKY, 0.82 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN SINCE
DECEMBER 1. THIS IS 0.43 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. 47.31 INCHES OF
RAIN HAS FALLEN SINCE JANUARY 1. THIS IS 1.57 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL
FOR THE YEAR.

AT EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, 0.86 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN SINCE
DECEMBER 1. THIS IS 0.20 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. 46.52 INCHES OF
RAIN HAS FALLEN SINCE JANUARY 1. THIS IS 3.91 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL.


PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...
TWO COLD FRONTS WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION DURING THE NEXT WEEK.
THE FIRST COLD FRONT WILL BRING RAIN AND MAYBE A RUMBLE OF THUNDER
SUNDAY INTO MONDAY. RAIN AMOUNTS WILL AVERAGE 1/2 TO 3/4 OF AN
INCH. THE SECOND FRONT WILL MAKE PASSAGE LATE MONDAY BRINGING
MINIMAL CHANCES FOR PRECIPITATION BUT A REINFORCING ROUND OF COLD
CANADIAN AIR.

THE 8 TO 14 DAY OUTLOOK, FOR DECEMBER 16 THROUGH 22, CALLS FOR
BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND ABOVE NORMAL CHANCES OF PRECIPITATION.
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ARE BETWEEN 35 TO 40 DEGREES AND
NORMAL PRECIPITATION DURING THIS TIME PERIOD IS AROUND ONE INCH.


HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...
AS OF DECEMBER 9, STREAMFLOWS ACROSS THE REGION ARE NORMAL TO
BELOW NORMAL.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...
THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED WHEN A MAJOR CHANGE IN DROUGHT
STATUS TAKES PLACE. THAT INCLUDES A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE AREA
COVERED BY SEVERE DROUGHT, AN INCREASE IN THE DROUGHT SEVERITY
LEVEL, OR ERADICATION OF THE SEVERE DROUGHT.

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED AT LEAST ONCE PER MONTH REGARDLESS OF
CHANGES IN DROUGHT STATUS UNTIL THE SEVERE DROUGHT HAS ENDED.
