FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
840 AM PDT SAT AUG 1 2015

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM PDT THIS EVENING...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...A RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH
10 PM FOR DRY AND UNSTABLE CONDITIONS. A STRONG UPPER RIDGE WILL
PERSIST OVER THE REGION FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...THEN GRADUALLY
WEAKEN AND SHIFT EAST EARLY NEXT WEEK. THE CONVECTIVE THREAT TODAY
WILL BE CONFINED TO THE SOUTHERN DISTRICTS OF THE WILLAMETTE
NATIONAL FOREST...BUT MAY EXPAND NORTH TONIGHT AND SUNDAY. MUCH
COOLER CONDITIONS RETURN MID AND LATE NEXT WEEK.

.DISCUSSION...A VERY STRONG UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WILL CONTINUE TO
DOMINATE THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THROUGH THE WEEKEND. EXPECT MID AND
HIGH-LEVEL HAINES 6 CONDITIONS OVER MUCH OF THE AREA THROUGH
TONIGHT. AT 0700 THE SURFACE THERMAL TROUGH WAS CENTERED FROM
SOUTHWEST OREGON THROUGH THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND THEN NORTHEAST
THROUGH THE COLUMBIA GORGE TO THE EAST SLOPES OF THE SOUTH
WASHINGTON CASCADES. THIS WILL SLOWLY SHIFT EAST TONIGHT AND SUNDAY
AS ONSHORE LOW-LEVEL FLOW GRADUALLY STRENGTHENS. EXPECT THE
POTENTIAL FOR COLUMN GROWTH TO 10 TO 12 THOUSAND FEET MSL OR GREATER
UNDER INTENSE BURNING CONDITIONS. POOR OVERNIGHT HUMIDITY RECOVERY
WILL CONTINUE TONIGHT ALONG AND ABOVE THERMAL BELTS DUE TO STRONG
SUBSIDENCE. FUELS ARE ALSO VERY DRY...SO EXPECT CRITICAL FIRE
WEATHER CONDITIONS TO BE IN PLACE THROUGH AT LEAST SATURDAY.

THE UPPER RIDGE GRADUALLY WEAKENS AND STARTS TO SHIFT EAST SUNDAY
NIGHT AS AN UPPER TROUGH DROPS SOUTH ALONG THE SOUTHERN BRITISH
COLUMBIA COAST. INCREASING SOUTH FLOW ALOFT SUNDAY WILL ALLOW THE
CONVECTIVE THREAT TO PUSH A LITTLE MORE NORTH SUNDAY. THE UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY MOVE OVER THE AREA NEXT
WEEK...INCREASING THE CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS BUT ALSO
COOLING TEMPERATURES BACK DOWN CLOSER TO NORMAL BY THE MIDDLE TO
LATTER PORTION OF NEXT WEEK.
