PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BINGHAMTON NY
800 AM EDT FRI JUN 21 2015

PENNSYLVANIA LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK IS FROM JUNE 21ST THROUGH
27TH. THE GOAL OF NEXT WEEK IS TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE DANGERS
ASSOCIATED WITH LIGHTNING...AND TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN BE USED
TO TAKE ACTION. LIGHTNING IS A SERIOUS AND DEADLY DANGER. LIGHTNING
SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK WILL HELP YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT LIGHTNING
RISKS...AND HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF...YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR BELONGINGS
FROM ONE OF NATURE`S DEADLIEST HAZARDS.

IN THE UNITED STATES...AN AVERAGE OF 51 PEOPLE ARE KILLED EACH YEAR
BY LIGHTNING. THAT IS MORE THAN THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE KILLED ANNUALLY
BY HURRICANES. IN 2013...23 DEATHS WERE ATTRIBUTED TO LIGHTNING.
UNFORTUNATELY...MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE STRUCK BUT SURVIVE WITH
LONG-TERM...DEBILITATING INJURIES. THE GOAL OF NEXT WEEK IS TO LOWER
LIGHTNING DEATH AND INJURY RATES ASSOCIATED WITH LIGHTNING.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BINGHAMTON WILL SEND OUT DAILY
PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE UPCOMING WEEK. THE
STATEMENTS WILL BE ISSUED EACH MORNING. EACH DAY WILL
FEATURE A DIFFERENT TOPIC ON LIGHTNING AND LIGHTNING SAFETY.
BELOW ARE THE TOPICS THAT WILL BE COVERED NEXT WEEK:

ON MONDAY JUNE 22...AN INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTNING AND LIGHTNING SAFETY.

ON TUESDAY JUNE 23...LIGHTNING`S MOST DEADLY ACTIVITIES.

ON WEDNESDAY JUNE 24...LIGHTNING SAFETY AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES.

ON THURSDAY JUNE 25...LIGHTNING SAFETY AT WORK.
