THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BINGHAMTON, NY HAS CONFIRMED A
MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR CAMILLUS IN ONONDAGA
COUNTY NEW YORK ON JULY 8 2014.

WIND DAMAGE BEGAN ON WEATHERIDGE DRIVE IN CAMILLUS. DAMAGE MAINLY
CONSISTED OF DOWNED LARGE BRANCHES...WITH OCCASIONAL TREE
UPROOTS...AND SNAPPED EVERGREEN TREES. TREES WERE BLOWN DOWN
BY VERY STRONG WEST TO SOUTHWEST WINDS ALONG THE ENTIRE PATH
LENGTH. THE DAMAGE PATH CONTINUED TO THE NORTHEAST ACROSS WEST
GENESSEE STREET. MORE DAMAGE WAS FOUND ALONG HENRY BEACH
DRIVE...THAT ALSO CONSISTED OF FELLED LARGE BRANCHES AND A FEW
TREE UPROOTS. SPORADIC DAMAGE CONTINUED FARTHER NORTHEASTWARD
TOWARDS MILTON AVENUE...BEFORE ENDING.

A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW AREA
OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN
5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL
WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND
CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND
THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE
THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
