THE NORTHWEST AVALANCHE CENTER IS EXTENDING AN AVALANCHE WARNING FOR
THE OLYMPICS AND NW WASHINGTON CASCADES AND ISSUING A WARNING FOR
THE REMAINDER OF THE WASHINGTON CASCADES...

TIMING... 4 PM TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON JANUARY 18TH.

LOCATION...THE OLYMPICS AND WASHINGTON CASCADES...NOT INCLUDING THE
SNOQUALMIE AND STEVENS PASS AREA

AVALANCHE DANGER...THE AVALANCHE DANGER IS EXPECTED TO BECOME HIGH
IN THESE AREAS WITH A NATURAL AVALANCHE CYCLE LIKELY BEGINNING
TUESDAY EVENING. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED
LATE TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.

REASON...INCREASING HEAVY RAIN AND SNOW LATE TUESDAY THROUGH
WEDNESDAY WILL ADD A SIGNIFICANT LOAD TO EXISTING WEAK LAYERS FORMED
DURING THE RECENT COLD WEATHER. RAIN ON SNOW WILL CAUSE A NATURAL
AVALANCHE CYCLE IN MANY AREAS. ALSO...STRONG SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL
BUILD NEW AND UNSTABLE WIND SLAB ON LEE SLOPES AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS
THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
