...A Recap of Weather Conditions Since December 1...

As we look towards warmer conditions returning to the area, here is
a look back at the weather conditions since December 1.

First, here is a table summarizing the average temperature for the
period from December 1 through January 12, with a ranking along with
the coldest year`s information.

Some other notable conditions that occurred during this 43 day
period...

Dec 16...West Yellowstone recorded 14 inches of snow. This set a
         daily record and was their 4th highest daily amount for
 December.
Dec 17...Bozeman`s low temperature of -35F set a daily low record
         and was their coldest temperature since January 2004.
 Helena dropped to -28F, which was also their coldest
 temperature since January 2004, and their coldest December
 temperature since 1990.
 Elk Park dropped to -48F. This was the coldest area
 temperature since February 2014.
Dec 18...It was a windy day. Havre had a daily wind average of 27.6
         mph, which set a daily record. Cut Bank had a daily wind
 average of 37.1 mph. This was their windiest December day
 since 1979 and their windiest day since January 1999. This
 wind average was their 7th highest daily wind average for
 December.
Dec 19...It was another windy day. Havre had a daily wind average of
         26.1 mph, which set a daily record. Their peak gust of 49
 mph also set a daily record.
 At Lewistown, the daily wind average of 26.0 mph and peak
 gust of 59 mph both set daily records.
Dec 20...Havre and Bozeman both set daily wind gust records. They
         recorded 53 and 49 mph, respectively.
Dec 22...Loma and Fort Benton warmed to 52F. This ranked as the
         lowest warmest December temperature in the area since 1978.
Dec 24...Another windy day with Havre setting a daily wind average
         record of 22.6 mph.
Jan  5...West Yellowstone`s morning low of -40F was their coldest
 January temperature since 2007. In 2007 their lowest
 temperature was -51F.
Jan  9...The area from Helena to near Three Forks reported some
         freezing rain, coating the area roads with a thin layer of
 ice.
Jan 11...Cut Bank`s morning low of -29F was their coldest January
         temperature since 2012.
Jan 12...Strong winds developed along the northern Rocky Mountain
         Front.With gusts of 50 mph in the Browning and East
 Glacier areas, ground blizzard conditions developed. Areas
 roads were closed as a result.

For December...
Helena recorded 23.8 inches of snow. This was their 6th highest
value for December, and their highest December amount since 1929.
Havre recorded an average wind speed of 14.0 mph. This was their 2nd
windiest December of record, and windiest December since 1978.
West Yellowstone measured 51.8 inches of snow. This was their 8th
highest amount for December.
The highest temperature of 43F at Great Falls was their
coolest-warmest temeperature in December since 1983.


For the entire 43 day period (Dec 1 - Jan 12)...
West Yellowstone recorded 70.9 inches of snow. This is their 5th
highest amount for this period.
Helena measured 31.6 inches of snow. This is also their 5th highest
amount for this period.
Holter Dam had 35.2 inches of snow. This is their highest amount for
this period. The old record was 31.1 inches in 1929-30.
