Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Juneau AK
337 PM AKDT Mon Apr 29 2024

.SHORT TERM...Dry, settled weather inundates the short term
forecast with a broad surface ridge across the panhandle. While
cloud cover continues for much of the northern half of the
panhandle including Yakutat, do not expect them to stay around
pass this evening. As soon as the clouds depart, expect to see the
familiar sunny skies of spring later this afternoon and tomorrow
with a pleasant sea breeze. During the overnight, a marine layer
is expected to move into the Yakutat area, with some possible
light drizzle.

.LONG TERM.../ Wednesday to Saturday night / A short wave will
move from the southern gulf southeast towards the Pacific
Northwest by Wednesday night and as another closed low moves out
of the Bering Sea across the eastern Aleutians by early Thursday.
This upper level feature also looks to be tracking in a similar
path to the southeast Friday. A larger low moves into the Bering
Sea Friday and Saturday while drifting east.

Weak high pressure over the eastern gulf and panhandle are holding
in place through Thursday. A weakening occluded front is strung
out over gulf Friday maybe approaching the panhandle Friday,
although beginning to think that will be held back and it wont be
until late Friday and Saturday the front the stronger low over
Bering Sea Friday and Saturday will push into SE AK Saturday. So
dry weather into Friday and rains returning for the weekend.

Am not expecting any winds over 20 kt until the weekend time frame
and those will be starting over the outer gulf waters.

&&

.AVIATION...Quiet weather over the next 24 hours. Biggest
challenge is how far the marine layer penetrates into the inner
channels overnight. Thinking MVFR develops in Icy Strait east of
Glacier Bay, with IFR CIGS under the layer west of Glacier Bay.
Areas of fog likely in the morning near Klawock and Yakutat,
burning off by late morning.

&&

.MARINE...A developing marine layer in the NE gulf coast will
advect southward, bringing lower visibilities and some possible
drizzle. Currently, a modest amount of low clouds over the gulf
will descend, forming the basis for this marine layer. Expect for
this layer to infiltrate into Yakutat Bay Entrance and Cross
Sound, but not much further. During the morning on Tuesday, the
marine layer will retreat with continued high pressure over the
panhandle. Mostly light to 10 knot winds for the inner channels
with a northerly component. Lynn Canal is the exception, with
southerly winds, possibly increasing to 15-20 knots depending on
daytime heating in the north.
