...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

The April 6th-9th, 1998 Tornado Outbreak was in its 3rd
day.  Of the 62 tornadoes that occurred, 14 struck on the
8th.  Once again, hardest hit was Alabama which was hit
by 5 twisters.The worst, by far, was an F5 with a track
31 miles long that reached three fourths of a mile wide.
The massive vortex killed 32, injured 273, and destroyed
around 1,000 homes; several of which were leveled or
vanished.  The extremely violent vortex started 27 miles
northeast of Tuscaloosa and ended on the north side of
Birmingham.  In all, the 14 tornadoes killed 36, injured
273, and caused around $300 million damage.
