Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI
303 PM CDT Fri Mar 22 2024

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Banded snow has all but ended across southeastern Wisconsin.
A few very light lake effect snow showers may impact lakeshore
  areas through the evening.

- Precipitation chances increase during the latter half of the
weekend and early next week. Light snow potential Sunday will
give way to warmer temperatures and rain by Monday.

.SHORT TERM...
Issued 303 PM CDT Fri Mar 22 2024

Tonight through Saturday night:

As of 3 PM, just a small band of light snow remains across SE
Wisconsin. Temperatures are at or above freezing in this area,
with traffic cams indicating that traffic is moving well. Thus
went ahead and cancelled the Advisory an hour early.

Heading into tonight, a few pockets of drizzle and light snow
have been observed to our north, likely the result of lake
induced convergence along the lakeshore. This activity will
slide southward this evening. Impacts should be minimal.

Otherwise, look for skies to clear from the west after midnight,
with lows falling into the upper teens and low 20s.

High pressure builds into the area for tomorrow, with light
north winds expected. Clouds will begin to increase from the
west late in the day as a strong area of low pressure develops
in eastern Colorado. An initial band of warm advection snow may
skirt the northwestern portion of the CWA as early as Saturday
night, but better chances will push in Sunday morning.

.LONG TERM...
Issued 303 PM CDT Fri Mar 22 2024

Sunday through Friday:

Trends suggest that most of the forecast area will remain just
south and east of the impactful snow that is expected to move
across western and northwestern Wisconsin on Sunday. Some light
accumulations are currently expected, with slightly higher
amounts northwest of the Dells. Any southward or eastward shift
of the system could result in more snow for southern and south
central Wisconsin.

A sharpening warm front will lift northward late Sunday and
Monday, with associated rain and warmer temperatures
overspreading the area on Monday. Highs Monday are favored to
reach the mid 50s, but will be highly dependent on any clearing
and the amount of shower activity that sticks around behind the
warm front.

A cold front will then sweep across the area late Monday or
Tuesday, with a good chance (>80%) for rain and a few
thunderstorms. Cooler temps will build in for mid to late week
behind the front.

.AVIATION...
Issued 303 PM CDT Fri Mar 22 2024

Conditions will improve this afternoon and evening as snow ends
across the region. Ceilings will remain MVFR into this evening
before improving to VFR. Winds will turn northerly later this
afternoon, with north winds continuing tonight.

A few light snow showers or light drizzle may impact terminals
close to Lake Michigan this evening, but confidence is low.
Sheboygan and Milwaukee will have the best chances, but Kenosha
could be affected as well. Overall impacts should be limited,
with just minor reductions in visibility and ceiling height.

.MARINE...
Issued 303 PM CDT Fri Mar 22 2024

Winds are expected to turn northerly late this afternoon as low
pressure passes by south of the lake. A Small Craft Advisory is
in effect for this afternoon for elevated waves. An additional
Advisory will be in effect tonight and tomorrow south of Port
Washington for elevated waves. High pressure will nose into the
area tomorrow, bringing a period of quiet weather.

Winds then start to increase from the southeast late Saturday
night and Sunday, as low pressure deepens over eastern
Colorado. That low will lift northeastward to northern Iowa by
Monday night, and then Lake Superior on Tuesday, while weakening
slightly. Near gale force south to southeast winds are likely
Monday and Tuesday as the low lifts northeastward.
