Fire Weather Forecast for Northeast and North Central Colorado
National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO
357 AM MDT Wed Mar 22 2017

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT THURSDAY AFTERNOON...

.DISCUSSION...Today and tonight...South to southeast winds will
continue on the plains today with a cooler and moister airmass in
that area. Mixing depth will be limited so despite the wind, smoke
dispersal will be poor or only marginally fair this afternoon.
Over the mountains conditions will be little changed from
yesterday. Southwest winds will increase a little this afternoon,
and then more tonight, ahead of an approaching weather system.

There is some question about how far the mountain winds and drier
air will advance down the foothills and into the nearby plains.
Current thinking is that the dry mountain conditions will mainly
stay in the mountains, with near Red Flag conditions in the
foothills and South Park for a few hours this afternoon. If these
winds make a stronger push they could cause these conditions to
spread into the western and southern parts of Denver and across
Douglas and western Elbert counties. More likely these areas will
be in between the mountain winds and plains humidity with
intermediate conditions.

LONG TERM DISCUSSION...Thursday through Sunday...A strong storm will
move from the Four Corners area Thursday morning into southeastern
Colorado by Friday morning. A dry line will likely set up with
possible critical fire weather conditions over portion of the
plains Thursday afternoon. As a result, a Fire Weather Watch has
been issued Thursday afternoon for Fire Weather Zones 240...241
and 244 through 247 due to gusty winds to 35 mph and very low
relative humidities. Conditions should improve significantly as
this storm system brings cooler temperatures along with snow in
the mountains and foothills, along with rain or a mix or rain and
snow across the northeast plains Thursday night and Friday.
Precipitation will diminish Friday night with warmer weather on
Saturday. Another weaker system is expected to bring another
chance of precipitation to the region on Sunday.

...Thunderstorms imply strong gusty erratic winds...
...All surface winds are 20-Foot...10-Minute averaged winds...
...CWR is Chance of Wetting Rain - 0.10 inch or more liquid...
...24 HR Trends are based on averages over the respective zone
groups and may not match the actual forecast values
                    shown in those groups...
