Denver/Boulder Aviation Discussion
Issued at 0949 UTC Thursday, April 25, 2024

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday/...
Issued at 1159 PM MDT Wed Apr 24 2024
Main concern revolves around fog potential at KDEN early this
morning. Surface dewpoints and moisture were actually ahead of
schedule and higher than some model guidance. There is a Denver
convergence zone centered about 20 miles north of KDEN, with low
level moisture wrapping around that feature. We are seeing stratus
develop to the north and east, and this will effectively wrap
around the surface cyclone. Right now, it still appears KDEN will
be right smack on the edge of the fog from around 10Z-15Z, and
just a couple miles could make or break this forecast. There`s
about a 30-40% chance KDEN will sink to 1/4SM FG VV001 for a
couple hours centered around 12Z, but slightly more likely
(60-70%) that we stay with VCFG and low clouds on the north edge
of KDEN property. Stay tuned! If the fog does move in, then look
for erosion by ~15Z as there`s agreement of a more southerly flow
regime allowing a weakening or shearing of the cyclone to the
northeast.
Otherwise, VFR conditions will be the rule through tonight. With
regard to shower/storm potential, it looks rather limited 21Z-03Z
per the limited moisture once the cyclone breaks down and shears
east/northeast. Thus, we`ll go with VCSH for this afternoon and
evening. The best chance of rain will occur after 04Z when deeper
north-northwest flow develops, and that`s when IMC ceilings will
be more likely at KDEN. KBJC and KAPA could escape without much
shower activity being closer to the downslope off the Front Range.
Winds...West/northwest winds may become variable as the cyclone
shear out after 15Z. Then there should be a trend (considerable
uncertainty) for a more easterly wind component 19Z-23Z, until
the cold front and/or shower outflows arrive (most likely 00Z-01Z)
with gusty northwest to northerly winds up to 35 knots.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 339 AM MDT Thu Apr 25 2024
VFR conditions and dry weather are expected this morning across the
TAF sites, and for much of the day. Early morning fog currently to
the east of COS is reducing visibility to below one mile at times.
While this fog is in place at this time, anticipate it to remain
east of COS while dissipating through the early morning hours. VFR
conditions and clear skies once again expected through the morning
into the afternoon. Will see an increase in clouds later this
afternoon, as an upper level system will move across the region.
This will result in showers across the higher terrain this afternoon,
but think any development will remain tied to the higher terrain. The
early morning lighter winds in place will increase through the
morning hours, with gusty west southwest winds expected this
afternoon. Think the strongest gusts will be across PUB and ALS,
where gusts in the 30-35 kt range are likely. VFR ceilings lower
later this evening, with mid clouds in place at all sites. Rain
expands in coverage later this evening, mainly for COS and PUB.
While generally light with vis staying 6sm or higher, would not be
surprised to see vis fall in the 3-5sm range at times, before this
rain shifts east of the terminals early Friday morning.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 1132 PM MDT Wed Apr 24 2024
Scattered to broken skies will remain across the area today
increasing and lowering slowly through the day. Showery activity
will move in for the afternoon with VCSH for the mountain TAF
sites. Ceilings will remain VFR through the period but will
start to drop after 00Z. ILS breakpoints might be met after that
period for KASE and KEGE. Conditions will continue to deteriorate
overnight and tomorrow.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Northwest winds will prevail through around
04Z when winds transition to southeast. Light southeast winds will
prevail overnight, but there is a low chance that outflow winds
from showers to the northwest could switch winds to northwest for
several hours any time from roughly 06-09Z. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms are likely from 18Z into the evening.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Isolated showers in
southwest Wyoming and northwest Utah will diminish into the
evening. Outflow winds from showers in northwest Utah could
enhance northwest flow through roughly 09Z throughout northern
Utah. Gusty southwest winds will diminish into the evening
throughout southern Utah. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are
likely for southwest Wyoming and most of Utah from 18Z into the
evening.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 402 AM MDT Thu Apr 25 2024
Scattered rain showers will continue this morning, but by
Thursday afternoon convection will develop/become widespread.
The chance of any terminal having a thunderstorm move directly
over it is too low for prevailing TS at this time, but the
chance is high enough for VCTS at KJAC from 19Z-00Z Thursday
afternoon. Have prevailing VFR at all terminals through the TAF
period, but brief reductions to MVFR are possible (Around a 1 in
3 chance) if a thunderstorm directly impacts a terminal. Most
terminals have prevailing VCSH Thursday afternoon as scattered
showers and thunderstorms pass through the area. Gusty erratic
wind will occur with thunderstorms and thunderstorm outflow
boundaries. Wind gusts at high as 40 mph will be possible with
thunderstorms. Mountain obscuration will occur at times as
BKN040- BKN100 CIGS continue across the area over the next 24
hours. The chance of thunderstorms will decrease after 06Z
tonight and be confined largely in vicinity of KCPR.
Please see the Aviation Weather Center and/or CWSU ZDV and ZLC for

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 1102 PM MDT Wed Apr 24 2024
Shower and thunderstorm activity is waning this evening, but we will
still have a few more hours with the possibility for a brief
downpour and a few lightning strikes. Southerly flow over the High
Plains will usher in low-level moisture through the morning hours.
Models have backed off slightly on the intensity of fog/low CIGs
through Thursday morning, but a period of MVFR to LIFR conditions is
still likely at KBFF, KAIA, KSNY, and KCYS. The latter two are the
most likely to see periods of IFR, while MVFR is favored for the
former. This should clear by the late morning hours as southeast
winds increase again. Another round of shower and thunderstorm
activity will develop after about 21z Thursday and gradually
increase in coverage through the evening hours. These storms will
have the potential to produce lighting, brief downpours, gusty
winds, and hail possible. Expect a wind shift during the evening
hours.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 1226 AM CDT Thu Apr 25 2024
Active period begins early Thursday morning as light showers
track west to east along the Platte Valley, with little to no
impacts at LBF initially. Later, more widespread rain and
thunderstorms will develop near if not over the LBF terminal and
lift north and east. This will drop flight categories to MVFR,
largely due to lower CIGs though brief visibility restrictions
in heavy rain cannot be ruled out. This activity may linger
through sunrise before shifting north.
The bulk of the daytime Thursday is anticipated to be quiet
outside of breezy east winds under a low to mid level stratus
deck. Gusts this afternoon will approach 30 knots. Tonight, rain
and thunderstorms are again expected to move into western and
central Nebraska affecting many terminals. Confidence in timing
of this round of convection is medium at best, with guidance
split on arriving the activity into LBF prior to the end of the
period or just after. For now, will hedge on an earlier arrival
but later forecasts may have a noteworthy shift in timing.
Accompanying these thunderstorms will likely be IFR CIGs with
both HREF and SREF probabilities of < 1kft ceilings increasing
to roughly a 50/50 shot.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/...
Issued at 1033 PM MDT Wed Apr 24 2024
Moisture return is ongoing across the Plains. Ceilings are
forecasted to gradually drop over the next few hours as IFR to
LIFR conditions continue to remain likely; some patchy dense fog
remains possible throughout the night but am anticipating
stratus will be the primary reduction in flight category.
Showers and storms remain forecasted at KMCK tonight as well
starting around 07Z with a low chance that will become severe
with large hail and torrential rainfall the primary hazard. LLWS
is also occurring at each terminal as the low level jet aids in
the moisture return.
Stratus looks to remain at each terminal for most if not all of
the day with the exception being KGLD where a dry line will help
erode clouds. The other story will be the severe thunderstorm
potential with the relative higher confidence at this time that
KMCK will be impacted. All hazards of severe weather will be
possible.

Low level moisture was streaming northward into a cool air mass
north of a warm front. Expect thunderstorms overnight in
vicinity of KHYS. Given the warm and moist advection, expect
CIGS to drop to IFR and possibly LIFR by 10-13z before slowly
improving with daytime heating and the passage of a warm front.
Thunderstorms will form near a dry line by 21z, possibly
affecting KGCK and KDDC between 21 and 01z, and KHYS after 00z.
These storms could be severe with hail and damaging wind.
Expect southeast winds to become southerly at 20-25 kts by
18-21z as the warm front passes.

As of midnight, latest satellite was continue to watch a low
cloud deck hold over KAMA and most of the Panhandles. The only
exception is KDHT as dry pocket is allowing for some brief
clearing over the area. This pocket is not expected to last long
as satellite is already seeing clouds back fill in to the area.
Otherwise, look for these low clouds to continue to place
terminals at MVFR to IFR level through the overnight. Occasional
mist or drizzle may also occur at terminals and create temporary
visibility drop. However, they are not expected to stay consistent
at this time with mention being put into TEMPOs. Otherwise,
conditions should improve from west to east starting late Thursday
morning. South to southwest winds will also increase and become
gusty around late Thursday morning to afternoon, then persist
throughout the afternoon hours. In addition, it appears the main
threat for thunderstorms during this forecast cycle may remain
east of the terminal sites at this time.

High clouds currently over central and eastern NM will continue to
slide eastward as dry air moves in from the southwest. Mountain
top winds will increase overnight, then strong winds will mix down
to the surface by late morning. Winds gusts in excess of 50kt will
be possible across much of eastern NM. BLDU may limit visibility,
especially around KROW. Gusts between 35 and 40kt will be common
west of the Central Mt Chain and an Airport Weather Warning will
be likely for KABQ Thursday afternoon. Otherwise, weak but moist
southeasterly flow at the surface across far eastern NM may aid in
the development of low clouds across the area overnight into
Thursday morning. As southwesterly winds mix down to the surface,
these low clouds will erode by mid to late morning.
