THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BUFFALO NY HAS CONFIRMED A
MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR WEST ALMOND IN
ALLEGANY COUNTY.

A THUNDERSTORM WITH STRONG DOWNDRAFT WINDS MOVED JUST NORTH AND
EAST OF THE CENTER OF WEST ALMOND NEW YORK WHERE A STORM SURVEY
FOUND MICROBURST DAMAGE STARTING NEAR THE EASTERN END OF PERCH
ROAD AND EXTENDING EAST-NORTHEAST TO NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF
COUNTY ROAD 2A AND KARR VALLEY ROAD. DOZENS OF HARDWOOD TREES
WHERE OBSERVED DOWNED IN A WEST-SOUTHWEST TO EAST-NORTHEAST
DIRECTION ALONG THE PATH. TREE DIAMETERS MEASURED OVER 1 FOOT
WITH SEVERAL BEING COMPLETELY UPROOTED WHILE OTHERS WERE SNAPPED
MIDWAY UP THE TRUNK. THE UNIFORM PATTERN OF THIS WIND DAMAGE IS
CONSISTENT WITH A MICROBURST.

A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW
AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS
THAN 5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS
HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT
AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE
WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH
ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
