DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DODGE CITY KS
1000 AM CDT THU SEP 25 2014

...CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT IN THE DROUGHT...

OVERVIEW...

THE LATEST DROUGHT MONITOR ISSUED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE ON SEPTEMBER 23RD SHOWS A CONTINUED DROUGHT ACROSS MUCH
OF SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS. AREAS ALONG AND SOUTH FROM
MORTON COUNTY TO MEADE COUNTY ARE IN D3 (EXTREME) DROUGHT. AREAS
ALONG AND WEST OF CLARK TO KEARNY COUNTIES ARE IN D2 (SEVERE)
DROUGHT. FARTHER EAST, MUCH OF THE AREA IS IN D1 (MODERATE) DROUGHT.
THERE IS A RELATIVELY SMALL AREA FROM GRAY TO ELLIS COUNTIES THAT
ARE IN D0 (ABNORMALLY DRY) DROUGHT. MUCH OF THE REGION DOES HAVE
POSITIVE PRECIPITATION ANOMALIES, EXCEPT MEDICINE LODGE, WHICH IS -
3.78 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THERE HAS BEEN IMPROVEMENT IN THE DROUGHT
OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS, PARTICULARLY COMPARED TO LAST SPRING.

CURRENT ENSO SATE...

ENSO NEUTRAL CONDITIONS ARE CONTINUING RIGHT NOW. THERE IS A 65
PERCENT CHANCE DURING THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE FALL AND WINTER OF EL
NINO CONDITIONS. SOME RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THIS FAVORS COOLER THAN
THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES ACROSS SOUTHWEST KANSAS WITH MORE
UNCERTAINTY IN PRECIPITATION ANOMALIES. THE OFFICIAL FORECAST FROM
THE CPC CALLS FOR NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND NEAR TO SLIGHTLY
ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION, PARTICULARLY FOR FAR SOUTHWEST KANSAS.

HYDROLOGIC IMPACTS...

RECENT RAINFALL HAS LED TO WATER FLOWS IN RIVERS AND STREAMS. LOCAL
FLOODING IS STILL POSSIBLE IN ASSOCIATION WITH ADDITIONAL HEAVY
THUNDERSTORM PRECIPITATION.

FIRE DANGER IMPACTS...

FUELS ARE NOT SUPPORTIVE FOR ACTIVE FIRE BEHAVIOR.

AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS...

SOIL MOISTURE DEFICITS ARE NEAR NORMAL FOR MUCH OF THE REGION,
EXCEPT TOWARDS SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS WHERE VALUES ARE 1.1 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL PER CPC THROUGH AUGUST 2014.

OUTLOOK...

THE SEASONAL DROUGHT LOOK CALLS FOR CONTINUED DROUGHT ACROSS FAR
WESTERN KANSAS WITH SOME IMPROVEMENT IN THE DROUGHT FOR CENTRAL AND
SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS.
