Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
237 PM PDT Tue Aug 22 2017

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...A return to breezy onshore flow with a
gradual cooling trend over the next couple of days. There is a
slight chance of thunderstorms over the Lane County Cascades later
this afternoon and tonight. A weak front will bring a chance for
light rain Thursday morning. Much warmer and drier conditions are
expected this weekend and early next week.

.DISCUSSION...Upper level high pressure slides east into the
Intermountain West today. The associated surface thermal trough
also pushed east of the Cascades late last night. This is bringing
about a return to seasonal onshore flow for the next several days,
with overnight and morning marine stratus pushes giving way to
afternoon sun for the lowlands. Southerly flow aloft associated
with a weak upper level closed low off the central California
coast will bring a very slight chance of thunderstorms over the
Lane County Cascades later this afternoon and tonight. A more
dramatic cooldown will occur Wednesday and Thursday as an upper
level trough from the Gulf of Alaska drops down into the Pac NW. A
weak frontal boundary will move onshore Wednesday night into
early Thursday. This system brings a chance for rain or drizzle,
although amounts would be very light. Upper level high pressure
becomes reestablished over the region Friday and strengthens
considerably over the weekend. This will bring a return to very
warm and dry conditions that looks likely to last into early next
week. The forecast models are suggesting that a surface thermal
trough will set up over the area as well. So we will likely be in
for a period of very good mixing, with periodic light to moderate
easterly winds possible. Pyle
