FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
314 PM PDT WED AUG 27 2014

...POOR HUMIDITY RECOVERY LIKELY IN THE HIGH CASCADES TONIGHT...

...DRY COLD FRONT TO PUSH THROUGH THURSDAY FOLLOWED BY COOLER
TEMPERATURES FOR THE WEEKEND...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...VERY WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST
TODAY...WITH INSTABILITY STILL LINGERING DUE TO A THERMAL TROUGH
NEAR THE CASCADES. THE THERMAL TROUGH WILL SHIFT EAST OF THE
CASCADES...OPENING THE DOOR FOR GUSTY WEST WINDS AS A DRY COLD FRONT
MOVES THROUGH THE CASCADES THURSDAY. THE MARINE LAYER WILL DEEPEN
SIGNIFICANTLY THURSDAY NIGHT WITH COOLER TEMPERATURES AND FAIRLY
WIDESPREAD MORNING CLOUDS FRIDAY. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL PUSH
TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL WITH SHOWERS POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND.

.DISCUSSION...THIS AFTERNOON REMAINS VERY WARM...DRY...AND UNSTABLE
AS A THERMAL TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE DRIFTS EASTWARD ACROSS THE
CASCADES. THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR VERY WARM AND
DRY WEATHER IS GRADUALLY WEAKENING...EVENTUALLY OPENING THE DOOR
FOR ONSHORE FLOW AND COOLER TEMPERATURES TO MOVE INTO THE REGION.
FIRST...ONSHORE FLOW WILL BECOME ROBUST THROUGH THE COASTAL GAPS
AND INTO PORTIONS OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY THIS EVENING. THE MARINE
LAYER WILL BE GRADUALLY DEEPENING THROUGH FRIDAY AS THE UPPER LEVEL
RIDGE RELAXES...ALLOWING SOME LOW CLOUDS TO PUSH INTO THE PORTLAND
METRO AREA THURSDAY MORNING. HOWEVER THE MARINE LAYER WILL ONLY BE
ABOUT 1500 TO 2000 FEET DEEP BY THURSDAY MORNING...THEREFORE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS OF THE CASCADES AND COAST RANGE CAN EXPECT MODERATE TO
POOR HUMIDITY RECOVERY TONIGHT ON MIDSLOPES AND RIDGES. A DRY COLD
FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THURSDAY...INCREASING
WEST TO NORTHWEST WIND ACROSS THE REGION. WHILE THIS FRONT SHOULD
BRING COOLER TEMPERATURES AND HIGHER RH TO PORTIONS OF THE
WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND AREAS WEST...THE CASCADES WILL LIKELY SEE AN
INCREASE IN WEST WIND THURSDAY AFTERNOON WHILE CONDITIONS ARE STILL
DRY. EVENTUALLY THE DEEPENING MARINE LAYER AND ONSHORE FLOW WILL
LIKELY ALLOW A SOLID DECK OF COASTAL LOW CLOUDS TO SPREAD WELL INTO
THE CASCADES THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING. THIS WILL BE THE
BEGINNING OF A MUCH COOLER AND MORE MOIST WEATHER REGIME WHICH WILL
LAST THROUGH THE WEEKEND AS A DEEP UPPER LEVEL TROUGH SETTLES OVER
THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. A FEW SHOWERS WILL BE POSSIBLE FROM TIME TO
TIME OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND...PARTICULARLY ACROSS OUR WASHINGTON
ZONES. WEAGLE
